Good reading: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?&t=114130
The main thing I took away from that thread is that stackexchange contains some really dodgy advice!

@stsoh, I appreciate some people love to tinker, but if so, always have backups handy, keep all your data and media in a separate data drive/partition, or do your experiments in a virtual machine install or a partition that you don't mind messing up. I suppose that since MX17 has not gone Final yet, you are just trying stuff because you can. If so, that's fine.

But if you intend to keep this partition long term, you will run into issues and it will be hard to support on this forum. You've changed some basic building blocks that other packages may depend on, and further updates of your system may lead to all sort of problems.

There is always the questionable lure of the latest and shiniest kernel, but it's not always true that the newest = the best.

You have an older pc, like you said in viewtopic.php?p=429087#p429087 . Your signature indicates it's an Intel Dual core E5400, which Google search says is an old Pentium. Will you really benefit from the latest kernel?

it does benefit my old pc, run smoother and faster, tat's the way liquorix design to be. try it. anyway i use minimal space for mxlinux (16gb of my 120gb ssd), freshly install with every beta/new release. fiber broadband take only a few minutes to download, upgrading with deb files takes about a couple of minutes instead of two hours for make install from kernel tar files. liquorix update within a day from kernel releases update.

Do you happen to have any benchmarks that show this or just think so? Would be very curious to see them if you do. I've never noticed a difference when using the liquorix kernel. Wish I had though.

Because of the way Liquorix tunes the scheduler & VMS, on a system running under heavy load a Liquorix kernel can make the desktop a bit more responsive. But on older hardware a new Liquorix kernel generally won't run any better than an older one.

If you have newer hardware where support is still in development, like Ryzen or a video chipset running the AMDGPU driver, then there are certain kernel updates that can improve performance.
HP Pavillion TP01, AMD Ryzen 3 5300G (quad core), Crucial 500GB SSD, Toshiba 6TB 7200rpm
Dell Inspiron 15, AMD Ryzen 7 2700u (quad core). Sabrent 500GB nvme, Seagate 1TB

run with the benchmark profiler, this is my current result. didn't any b4 kernel upgrade.

but even with performance benefits, updates may still bork other parts of your system because of your
...upgrade gcc-7 and cpp-7 from buster repo
Does that mean every time it breaks, you will reinstall your system and then install the latest and greatest kernel from a .deb file again, with the necessary importing of gcc and cpp from buster repo?

That's my understanding of your comments:
...anyway i use minimal space for mxlinux (16gb of my 120gb ssd), freshly install with every beta/new release. fiber broadband take only a few minutes to download, upgrading with deb files takes about a couple of minutes instead of two hours for make install from kernel tar files

Cool, thanks! Unfortunately doesn't help a whole lot without the other for a comparison.
