I installed OpenCPN from MX's "Wellcome" -> popular programs on my laptop
and everything works fine now.
On the Raspberry I followed the instructions from the link you gave me.

Apparently that deb is from an Ubuntu PPA, but works well on MX. When we get more time in a few weeks, I'll see if we can port it over to our repos, if it's not a metric tonne of packages...
