Hmm. I installed KDE with MXPI and it is coexisting with XFCE. I rarely if ever log in to it, but it is there. My basic reasons for installing it was to get Dolphin file manager and Kate editor. I did not install them separately so I did not have to ensure all the support files were also installed separately. Some might say that is overkill just to get two applications, but with plenty of drive space, not an issue for me. I am not a minimalist.
I see no issues running XFCE with KDE having been installed.

Re: KDE installed form MXPI. coexisting with XFCE
I would say it's overkill.
It would be really nice if MX could package Dolphin, Konsole, and Kate/Kwrite with modified depends so as not to require the whole of KDE. I think it's just some kioslaves and kipi plugins.
These applications are an improvement over the Xfce offerings IMHO.

LOL I knew someone would say that and many think that. OK by me. I am a happy camper. My system my configuration.sunrat wrote: ↑Tue Jun 18, 2019 6:48 pm I would say it's overkill.

The rest of my post are genuine ideas that have crossed my mind previously.
Re: KDE installed form MXPI. coexisting with XFCE
In Stevo's MX-16 KDE spin I could change the look of Xfce from inside the KDE session by using the GTK related settings. I'm not trying to convince anyone about anything, but if you are a heavy KDE user and a heavy Xfce user (customization-wise) it's probably wise to keep KDE on a separate partition.
Whatever works for you. It was something I thought was worth mentioning.

Re: KDE installed form MXPI. coexisting with XFCE
Understand, my usage is different as I do not use KDE. There probably are issues when in KDE that happen when installed with XFCE. For a pure KDE experience a separate install is probably wise.

Re: KDE installed form MXPI. coexisting with XFCE
Yes, different use cases. MX 15/16 is a different base and it was KDE4 too I believe so things might have changed since then.
Re: KDE installed form MXPI. coexisting with XFCE
Overkill or not, I've done this sort of thing in the past. The only negatives I recall: Menus can get kinda messy, and there are lots more packages to download updates for. If doing it affected performance, I didn't notice.
Re: KDE installed form MXPI. coexisting with XFCE
Stevo's MX-16 KDE works fine. But if you installed KDE yourself, xfce interfered with the settings.

Some food for thought.

Going forward, when gtk3 xfce 4.14 is released, kvantum manager may be needed more, for theming of MX apps, which use the Qt toolkit.
