<SOLVED> Synaptic: "Mark All Upgrades" won't mark the upgradable packages

#1 Post by philotux »

Trying to perform the upgrades via Synaptic (version 0.84.2), I noticed that the "Mark All Upgrades" button in the toolbar will not mark the packages to be upgraded. Also right clicking on the upgradable packages the option for "Mark for Upgrade" is greyed out. Purging and reinstalling haven't solved the issue. I use Synaptic quite often for package management, so I appreciate your help to make it work again.

TIA

Did you set Synaptic to do a

sudo apt upgrade

instead of

sudo apt dist-upgrade or full-upgrade?

This is what I have in Settings: Preferences: General >> System Upgrade= Smart Upgrade. Changing to "Default Upgrade" doesn't seem to help either.

Why don't you open your terminal, and do a:

sudo apt update

and then

sudo apt full-upgrade

and paste the terminal text that appears?

That way we can see more info.

Looks like there is something wrong with the upgrade :(

I also did a bunch of upgrades, but Handbrake was held back.

I assumed it was some kind of dependency issue.
No time to troubleshoot now, the old handbrake is still working, so less urgency.

Synaptic did not give any message about dependencies though...

I wonder if this is relevant (see last paragraph of Stevo's post):

Maybe some of the other packages he mentioned are still in test repo?

This might give some info on why the handbrake packages won't upgrade:

Code: Select all

apt-get install handbrake handbrake-cli -s

Lots of unmet dependencies:

apt-get install handbrake handbrake-cli -s

Code: Select all

NOTE: This is only a simulation!
apt-get needs root privileges for real execution.
Keep also in mind that locking is deactivated,
so don't depend on the relevance to the real current situation!

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

Tim (timkb4cq) or Stevo might have forgotten to move those dependencies from the testrepo to main.
Maybe PM one of them and reference this thread.
