Solved-Not Booting from Flash drive

#1

Post by tosim » Sun Sep 02, 2018 12:20 pm

I placed MX17,64b(along with other distro's iso's), on a flash drive using "Multi-Boot USB" program. However, when attempting to boot with MX17, all I get is a "front page plain picture, devoid of anything else. Have tried this several times, including with the 32b version, always the same. I'm thinking that the iso will only run from a HDD, but also wonder if I can install it(the iso), on a DVD, in essence, making a Live CD? Also, if I install the iso, all by itself(no Multi-Boot USB OR OTHER ISO'S),on the flash drive, will it run(with persistence)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You need to use unebootin to put the image on the flash-drive. If you have MX installed somewhere, you could also use MX Live USB creator.

Probably.
You have to choose the type of persistence at boot of the USB.

Edit: More info in Section 2.2 of the MX Manual via Thunar: /usr/bin/mx-manual

It might depend on how Multi-Boot USB saves the isos, I guess.

Is it this one? http://multibootusb.org/

If so, what type of persistence are you referring to?

http://multibootusb.org/page_guide/#add ... tence-file

Multiboot's persistence or antiX/MX's type of persistence.

I think more information is required.

[EDIT] Oops. I may have misunderstood your question. I think you are referring to installing the MX iso on a clean USB, not one prepared by Multiboot USB?

I think I overlooked your first question:
I'm thinking that the iso will only run from a HDD, but also wonder if I can install it(the iso), on a DVD, in essence, making a Live CD?
No, I don't think it will install to DVD; although, it can be written/burned to a DVD to execute as a LiveDVD.

The iso can be installed to the HDD, an SSD or a USB (size permitting) from either a LiveUSB or a LiveDVD.
An MX (or antiX) iso can be installed as a Frugal install, as well.

Starting at Section 2.2.3 is information on LiveDVD/USBs.

NOTE: Forgot about RW-DVDs. This has been done by some --Puppy or DSL. It will allow installation.
It will be much, much {painfully} slower than a USB.

Yes, you can! Assuming you mean this from here: http://multibootusb.org.
The syslinux-part is not working with MX-Linux,
but you could select the grub2-menu.
You would need a bit manual adjustment of the provided grub.cfg.
In additon MX uses a different persistence technique to the one multibootusb is offering.
Here my menuentries which do work for MX-Linux with MultibootUSB.org:
This file I needed to edit:
/media/fehlix/USB DISK/multibootusb/MX-17.1_August_386/boot/grub/grub.cfg
This is the first menu entry:

Code: Select all

menuentry " snapshot MX-17.1_386 Horizon (15 August 2018)" {
linux /multibootusb/MX-17.1_August_386/antiX/vmlinuz quiet image_dir=/multibootusb/MX-17.1_August_386
initrd /multibootusb/MX-17.1_August_386/antiX/initrd.gz
}
which I changed to this three menu entries for
- normal boot (without persistence)
- with persistence
- and with a text-menu option:
and including my keyboard defaults and timezone and language:

Code: Select all

menuentry "MX-17.1_386 Horizon (15 August 2018)" {
    set antix="/multibootusb/MX-17.1_August_386/antiX"
    # set vmlinuz="$antix/vmlinuz"
    # search --no-floppy --file --set=root $vmlinuz
    probe -u $root --set=buuid
    linux $antix/vmlinuz quiet buuid=$buuid bdir=$antix pdir=$antix  kbd=de kbvar=nodeadkeys kbopt=caps:backspace lang=de tz=Europe/Berlin
    initrd $antix/initrd.gz
}

menuentry "persist MX-17.1_386 Horizon (15 August 2018)" {
    set antix="/multibootusb/MX-17.1_August_386/antiX"
    # set vmlinuz="$antix/vmlinuz"
    # search --no-floppy --file --set=root $vmlinuz
    probe -u $root --set=buuid
    linux $antix/vmlinuz quiet persist_static buuid=$buuid bdir=$antix pdir=$antix  kbd=de kbvar=nodeadkeys kbopt=caps:backspace lang=de tz=Europe/Berlin
    initrd $antix/initrd.gz
}
menuentry "text-menus MX-17.1_386 Horizon (15 August 2018)" {
    set antix="/multibootusb/MX-17.1_August_386/antiX"
    # set vmlinuz="$antix/vmlinuz"
    # search --no-floppy --file --set=root $vmlinuz
    probe -u $root --set=buuid
    linux $antix/vmlinuz quiet menus buuid=$buuid bdir=$antix pdir=$antix  kbd=de kbvar=nodeadkeys kbopt=caps:backspace lang=de tz=Europe/Berlin
    initrd $antix/initrd.gz
}
For persistence you shall select a the size less then 4GB, as the multi boot is vfat (FAT32),
which will not allow bigger files.
:puppy:
EDIT: I've commented out the search $vmlinuz to speed up the boot a bit as we have already $root set and the search is not needed.
EDIT2: corrected a typo for text-menu, which is option menus instead of menu (which I never used anyway ;=)
