USB WIFI Dongle not working on MX linux 17.1

#1 Post by linuxguy1986 » Thu Dec 06, 2018 10:33 pm

Hello all I installed MX Linux 17.1 and have a USB WIFI Dongle that seems to recognize my wifi, but when I go ahead and choosed my home wifi and enter password, it wont connect, it will just try to connect and will just keep circling but it would never connect. So I downloaded Peppermint OS and boom it connect instantly after I put my password in for the Dongle. Does any one know why this is, I would really like to choose and use MX 17.1 over Peppermint OS

Your inxi output from Peppermint show that you're connected with the wired NIC, and doesn't show the USB wi-fi hardware at all, so isn't any help in solving that issue. :confused:

Plug in the usb dongle, and run

Code: Select all

lsusb
so we can see what model/chipset it is.
MSI 970A-G43 MB, AMD FX-6300 (six core), 16GB RAM, GeForce 730, Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD, Seagate Barracuda XT 3TB

I had similar situation with Realtek Wifi dongle .
My device was

Code: Select all

$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 008: ID 0bda:818b Realtek Semiconductor Corp.

Add below lines to the file > /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf

Code: Select all

[device]
wifi.scan-rand-mac-address=no
Above lines does the trick with rtl8xxxu kernel module .
