USB installation not remembering root or demo password

#1 Post by moidebe » Tue Oct 16, 2018 5:54 am

Hi all,
I've just started with MX linux yesterday and it looks fantastic for what I need it for - Network Engineers toolkit to use any windows laptop to do network diags.
I've created a bootable USB and setup persistence using the static option and this works fine for my Lenovo laptop. My root and demo account have the new password and I've installed software that I need.

I was at work this morning and tried to use the USB in a Fujitsu laptop. First thing I noticed is that the F1-8 options weren't present on the boot up screen (UEFI boot maybe?). I booted the USB and came to the desktop that didn't have my wallpaper and the passwords of the root and demo account were the original.

Is there something I need to do to make the USB work correctly on the Fujitsu laptop?
I managed at one point to get the USB to boot on the Fujitsu laptop and the terminal output stopped and asked for the timezone but I couldn't use the keyboard to choose an option, it seemed that the keyboard was completely dead, no keys would work until I rebooted again and then got to the MX desktop which is the original one not my one.

Can anybody help please?
Thanks

Probably it is booting via UEFI as you thought. Either disable it in the bios, or when you boot the usb, use the custom menus to (re)set up persistence

Thanks for replying.
Does that mean you can't have a common persistence between legacy and UEFI?

If I setup persistence on the UEFI will it overwrite my legacy persistence?

The persistence files previously set up will be used. The menus just tell the system to look for them. The menus work just like the F keys do on legacy boots.

Again, thanks for the awesome quick responses!

I've just tried to set this up again on the UEFI machine. If I go to "MX-17.1 x64 Customize Boot (text menus)" it starts to load and asks me to " Select Language" but unfortunately the keyboard is completely unresponsive.
I want to enter 10=English (UK) but can't do anything to proceed.
Is there anything I need to do to get the keyboard to work at this stage?

If I boot up using the 1st boot option "MX-17.1 x64" the boot process works and the desktop is shown and the keyboard works but I have the persistence issue then??

Ok, I got it to boot with the persistence on the UEFI machine.
I had to edit the boot menu item 'e' and use the following boot codes:
lang=uk kbd=uk tz=Europe/London from=usb persist=s

Is there any reason why the keyboard didn't work during the text menus? any one got any ideas?

Do I need all those boot codes? could I use just 'lang=uk persist=s' for example?
Could I somehow create a boot menu item with the boot codes already entered?

Thanks for all the help so far guys! it's much appreciated.

kbd=uk gives a Ukrainian keyboard. Shouldn't it be kbd=gb?

Once you have persistence working, you shouldn't need lang=uk kbd=uk tz=Europe/London since they should be saved in savestate mode (enabled by default).

You should only need persist=s (you are using static persistence, right?)

Easiest probably : Wthin booted MX
open Menu -> Diskmanager
to mount uefi-partiton
look for somethin like:
mount /sd?? /media/Live_uefi
edit /media/Live_uefi/boot/grub/grub.cfg
and change
linux /antiX/vmlinuz quiet
unmount uefi_partition again and reboot.

for English language and keyboard to
linux /antiX/vmlinuz quiet lang=en_GB kbd=gb tz=Europe/London persist_static
Gigabyte Z77M-D3H, Intel Xeon E3-1240 V2 (Quad core), 32GB RAM,
GeForce GTX 770, Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB, Seagate Barracuda 4TB

Thanks everyone!

All sorted now, I changed the grub.cfg and added persist=s after the quiet option.
I did the following
mkdir /media/live_uefi
sudo mount /dev/sdb2 /media/live_uefi
sudo vi /media/live_uefi/boot/grub/grub.cfg
added persist=s to the linux ....... quiet line
saved the file
sudo umount /media/live_uefi
Rebooted and checked.

Good spot on the kbd=uk! lol! I think lang=uk overrode the kbd option - that could have been a funny issue, a Ukrainian keyboard layout, lol.

Thanks again everyone!
