Time to start reviewing: UsersManual_20190908

#1 Post by Jerry3904 »

[At least that's when it was submitted, though I forgot to change the version date.]

I have revised much of the first 4 sections, but not even looked at anything after that yet. The most important to review right now are
Sections 2 and 3. Please don't just say it's wrong--tell me what to put instead!

What?

--grammar, spelling and punctuation (US English)
--broken links
--missing material, especially for Xfce 4.14 (this takes some serious thought)
--general stupidities

When?

--the next 8 days, finishing Sunday 9/15

What else?

Some of the images are old, such as the early ones of the install sequence. If someone wants to send me (manual AT mxlinux DOT org) those, I'd be grateful. (I already know that the MX Tools panel is out of date b/c of Date & Time being now in.)

TIA
Production: 5.10, MX-23 Xfce, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 16 GB, SSD 120 GB, Data 1TB
Personal: Lenovo X1 Carbon with MX-23 Fluxbox and Windows 10
Other: Raspberry Pi 5 with MX-23 Xfce Raspberry Pi Respin

Just a small suggestion to start off the countdown, from mxum- 20190614

# Android is not cooperating

New Firefox for Android. Seems to have a problem.

More later...

Bummer.
Opera Touch is a faster tool on Android,
but it makes me enter password every login, regardless I say remember me. [Fixed]
Firefox doesn't, but the new Ff 4 Android has a problem with pasting?

Thanks, but what's the change?

BTW: the discussion will be easier if we all refer to the same version, since a lot of changes have gone on. The one that came through with B2 has a big "BETA" watermark on each page.

Understand. Good idea.

Please post a link to the b2 manual iteration.
Don't have the bandwidth at the moment for the whole 9 yards.

Thanks

Have gotten the message and started reviewing. Delayed by issue in downloading the Beta 2. Problem is at this end, it stalls on the final few
seconds then eventually times out. Had the same error a couple of years ago. Now using a backup desktop and all is well. Will post diagram
updates to manual @ adress as you suggested.
Backup: Dell9010, MX-19_B2, Win7, 120 SSD, WD 232GIB HD, 4GB RAM
Primary :Homebrew64 bit Intel duo core 2 GB RAM, 120 GB Kingston SSD, Seagate1TB.
MX-18.2 64bit. Also MX17, Kubuntu14.04 & Puppy 6.3.

This feedback from Gordon by email:
Sections 1 & 2.

(a) Have checked all Links, where any problems found,
they are mentioned in sub-section notes.

1.1 About MX Linux.

Second para, end of first line. Remove redundant word "with".
Link to Our Repos does not work.

1.2 About this Manual

As suggested already, third para last line, replace "difficult" with "unfamiliar"

1.3 System Requirements

First line, suggest " your computer would normally need the following....."

1.7.1 Systemd

Second para, end of second line, suggest a comma (,) after word "init".

1.7.2 Non-free software

First para, beginning second line, replace "assure" with "ensure".

2.1 Introduction

My thoughts are that this sub-section is not an Introduction. It is a
description of running from a Live medium and the heading should
say that. Perhaps "Live medium" ? Alternatively, a new Introduction
that comments briefly about Live Medium or Installation. Can write a
draft for this if you wish.
2.1.1 PAE or NonPAE

Perhaps this needs a rethink of how specification requirements are defined
in Section 1 of this Manual with a transfer of pae/non-pae to that area. With
systems being updated and old machines gradually fading out, pae may
disappear?

2.1.2 CPU and Memory

Again perhaps - transfer both of these questions to Section 1 so that
S 2 is about installation.

2.2.1

Link to Download page still refers to MX18.3. Needs to be updated when
19RC is available.

Is D O's video in the right place. Might be better in 2.2.3 after para headed USB?

Figure 2-1 is well out of date (e.g. new mirrors in NZ and Aussie) Perhaps
replace it with a link to:
https://mxlinux.org/wiki/system/iso-download-mirrors/

Figure 2.2 will need update when such is available

2.2.2 GPG Signature

Add MX19 to the instructions accessed by the Link to Wiki item
signed iso files.

2.3.1 Coming from Windows.

Have checked spelling, Links and layout. Unable to verify content as
now have no access to Windows
Is anybody looking at this? Section 3 has had a lot of changes for Xfce 4.14, and I'm not sure they are all correct or sufficient.
