MX-17.1 download page: Proposal for clarifying download ways (making the user journey easier)

#1 Post by MX-16_fan »

Currently, when you try to download MX-17.1, you might, like I did (cf. https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php?f=97&t=45768), run into three issues:

1) When you go the the "Original Releases" section on https://mxlinux.org/download-links, you might expect to download something from "St. Louis MO, US". However, when you click on that entry, you'll be led to the SOURCEFORGE platform, which by default will choose some mirror close to you (none of which seem to be in St. Louis).

2) When you click on the green download button, you get a snapshot, not an Original Release.

3) When you search for the signature, you might not find the signature, as it is not in the folder you're in (Home / Final"), but (logically) in "Home / Snapshots".

As Adrian stated, being offered the snapshots rather than Original Releases is exactly what is intended.

So here's a proposal to avoid confusion:

a) Change the "Original Release" heading on https://mxlinux.org/download-links to "Latest version (snapshot)".

b) Change the text body in "Original Release" from "The original release can be obtained by direct download ... . (...)" to "Our latest snapshot can be obtained by direct download ... . (...)".

c) Change the "St. Louis MO, US" link text to "SOURCEFORGE mirror system".

e) Let that link point to https://sourceforge.net/projects/mx-lin ... Snapshots/ instead of https://sourceforge.net/projects/mx-linux/files/Final/.

f) Change the "Monthly update/upgrade" section's heading to "Latest major releases", and let it point to https://sourceforge.net/projects/mx-lin ... l/MX-17.1/.

g) Add a section headed "Older versions", and let it point to http://mxrepo.com/snapshots/?C=M;O=D (while renaming "/snapshots" to "/archived").

h) Add a section called "Community respins" and let it point to "http://mxrepo.com/snapshots/Community_Respins/" (while once more I'm not sure whether "/snapshots" wouldn't indicate something different than expected).

What do you think?

Greetings, and a nice weekend to all of you , Joe

Great. Thanks for your input. We certainly will review this.
I'm about also to tweak a bit the instructions for signature verification to make it easier for new users.
And we might also consolidate our instructions for using incremental download using ZSYNC.
Have a look into my latest ZSYNC download here:

FYI...what you may not realize about that green button on sourceforge is that it is site wide, not page specific. so no matter how we *might* change links, the green button is wrong somewhere.

It also only points to the 64 bit release.

and as far as I can tell, there is no way to NOT have a green "latest download" button.

calling the site "St. Louis" has bothered me for a while, because my sourceforge does not necessarily download from St. Louis either. I like just changing that to "Sourceforge".

we have a community respins link already as described (not quite same verbiage, but its there.)

it makes some sense as well I think to change the "monthly updates" link to the sourceforge site rather than the mxrepo mirror site it currently links to. if nothing else it possibly saves a little bandwidth on the servers we pay for.

FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

Adrian already explained that here: https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php ... 09#p454409.

This proposal aims only at the things that can be changed, not at what apparently cannot be changed.
