Re: Thinkpads

#51 Post by Hierax_ca »

Thinkpad-W700ds 2757-CTO 2009.

This is a fresh install today using the latest MX Snapshot (I stupidly screwed up the old MX install fiddling with Kernels and NVidia drivers) on a very similar W700ds to my current main working machine (above), but on an older HDD which dual boots with Ubuntu on an identical but separate HDD so I can compare and contrast software applications on the two versions of Linux on the exact same hardware.

The very unusual dual display of the W700ds seemed to have problems working properly with the most recent 4.9.126 antiX kernel but works with the 4.15.0-1 (default for MX-17.1 snapshot), here I'm using the handy MX Test Repo's most recently updated version, which is working fine :

uname -a

Code: Select all

Linux Thinkpad-W700ds-Linux-MX17109 4.15.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.15.17-1~mx17+1 (2018-04-23) x86_64 GNU/Linux
- edit: few days later un-installed and re-installed 4.9.126 antiX kernel and now it also seems to be working just fine :
uname -a

Code: Select all

Linux Thinkpad-W700ds-Linux-MX17109 4.9.126-antix.1-amd64-smp #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Sep 10 15:16:15 BST 2018 x86_64 GNU/Linux
For contrast with my main machine (a very similar W700ds), which successfully uses the proprietary NVidia 340.106 graphics driver, here I'm just using the open source driver which is also working just fine (later I might do some testing on exactly what works and doesn't but for now I'm just sticking to two options that are working for me):

inxi -Gxxx

Code: Select all

Graphics: Device-1: NVIDIA G92GLM [Quadro FX 3700M] vendor: Lenovo driver: nouveau v: kernel bus ID: 01:00.0

edit: few days later installed the proprietary backported NVidia graphics drivers which also work :

#52 Post by Hierax_ca »

Thinkpad W700 2752-RZ2 2009.

Similar to the previous (above) W700ds with the NNvidia FX 3700M Graphics (but without the dual-screen), it also failed with the 4.9.126 Kernel, but it is working just fine with either the 4.9.0-8/4.9.110 Debian Kernel or the AntiX 4.9.123 Kernel. Maybe some sort of Graphics kernel incompatibility thing, not sure. Regardless works fine with these or 4.15.0-1.
-- Edit/Update: Upon uninstalling and reinstalling the 4.9.126 Kernel it is now running fine (same with the W701)!

Thinkpad W701 2500-3BU 2010. This powerhouse Thinkpad works great with MX Linux.

Very similar but slightly newer than the above W700 and W700ds series, the W701 with the NVidia FX 2800M graphics is working fine with the 4.9.126 antiX kernel and doesn't have the same issue (fwiw, also works with the 4.15.0-1/4.15.17 mx17.1 default/testing and 4.9.0-8/4.9.110 debian kernels):

Re: Thinkpads

#54 Post by Hierax_ca »

Thinkpad W701 4323-CTO 2010. A lesser version of the above W701 (lower resolution screen and less RAM) works great with MX.

At first the 4.9.126-antiX kernel inexplicably didn''t fully boot (blank screen with underline cursor), despite this working with the same NVidia FX 2800M in the above W701, but the 4.9.0-8/4.9.110 Debian (and the 4.15.17 MX testing) kernel worked just fine. Upon uninstalling and reinstalling 4.9.126 (after a weird autoreboot glitch upon attempting to update) 4.9.126 is now running fine! [edited to reflect fix]

Re: Thinkpads

#55 Post by Hierax_ca »

Thinkpad x220 4287-67U 2012. Works fine despite this new-fangled UEFI BIOS thing.

Small and doesn't have an UltraBay, nor a dedicated graphics card, but the x220 does allow another SSD to be added as long as it is an mSATA, I've done so here to massively increase storage (I'm using mSATA for OS and a Hybrid HDD/SSD for data storage but I think if you wanted pure speed it would be faster to use a SSD in the main drive slot, either way a nice option to have!). Also, the small screen isn't great in a lot of ways being a step down from the glory days of x6x SXGA+ Thinkpads but, on the positive side, for DOS Box it is still pretty damn close to XGA.

Running 4.15.17 from MX Test Repos (also works fine with both the 4.9.0-8/4.9.110 Debian and 4.9.126 AntiX LTS kernels):

Re: Thinkpads

#56 Post by Hierax_ca »

Thinkpad x220t 4298-A16 2011. Unsurprisingly, very similar to the x220 (above) but a Tablet and has the same problems as the other tablets with the rotational pen/screen alignment issue (same as x60t, x61t, and x200t above). This one also has a touch screen not just the pen, fortunately (under mouse settings) it can be turned off when using the pen so your hand touching the screen doesn't screw things up when writing/drawing.

Runs 4.15.17 from MX Testing Repo and the 4.9.0-8/4.9.110 Debian kernel, and just to show it works also here's the most up-to-date 4.9 kernel, the aforementioned 4.9.126 AntiX and it doesn't have any problems here:

Re: Thinkpads

#57 Post by Hierax_ca »

And finally (for now), my "newest" and most powerful Thinkpad W520 4284-4YU from 2012. It works great (using the Legacy Boot in BIOS, instead of this new-fangled UEFI stuff)!

There was a problem the same as some of the above having to re-install the 4.9.126 antiX kernel to get it to boot without the flashing underline cursor black screen problem, but upon the 2nd installation it seems to be working fine. (it also works well with 4.9.0-8/4.9.110 Debian and 4.15.17 MX Testing kernels).

uname -a

Code: Select all

Linux Thinkpad-W520-Linux-MX-17 4.9.126-antix.1-amd64-smp #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Sep 10 15:16:15 BST 2018 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Graphics worked fine with the open source drivers and also with the proprietary NVidia 384.130 (I didn't try the backports one because I remember some YouTubers having major issues with the 390.xx and skipping it for a newer one). However, to get the proprietary drivers working you have to make sure that the BIOS setting (F1 or ThinkVantage button on Boot --> Config --> Display --> Graphic Device) has the display NOT set to Optimus mode or it won't boot properly, you can use" Integrated Graphics" for the Intel or "Discrete Graphics" for the NVidia, Optimus works fine with Windows but not Linux. Anyway here it is with the BIOS settings done and proprietary driver installed:

Re: Thinkpads

#58 Post by Hierax_ca »

Overall, antiX and MX are working great for a wide variety of Thinkpads from 1999-2012 that I've tested on many different Linux distros from 2014-2018 and antiX/MX are the absolute best overall!

The only major outstanding issue, and it's not unique to antiX/MX Linux, is getting Pen enabled Tablets (Thinkpad x-series: x60t, x61t, x200t, x220t, see above) to be able to get the screen to rotate and still have the pen's cursor line up properly with the screen to write/draw/paint; currently, it only works in the standard landscape orientation (display rotation=none), changing to either portrait or reversed landscape doesn't align the cursor correctly with the objects on the screen (display rotation: None = works, Left, Right, or Inverted = fails), that is to say the screen rotates fine but the pointer doesn't.

Anyone who can help me get this last big thing fixed will have my undying gratitude and I'll make another donation to MX so you won't only be helping me and other tablet users but MX as a whole.

Thank You to all of the antiX/MX team who have put in such hard work over the years to bring us the best Linux distros to put on the best laptops! Thinkpads and antiX/MX Linux is a dream team of computing!
