MX Ascii Respin - Devuan (final)

#1 Post by rasat »

It was requested to upload this MX Ascii (stretch) version due to MX Beowulf immaturity, unstable buster. Beowulf was upgraded from this respin.

How-its-done: "Migrating from Debian to Devuan":
https://mn3m.info/posts/migrating-from- ... to-devuan/

MX18.2 install and Devuan repos added.

Code: Select all

apt-get update
apt-get install -y --force-yes devuan-keyring
apt-get update
apt-get install -y sysvinit sysvinit-core
apt-get remove --purge --auto-remove systemd
apt-get install -y base-files
apt-get -y dist-upgrade
apt-get -y autoremove --purge
apt-get -y autoclean
There was another attempt by installing 8 necessary Devuan packages but removes important MX tools, synaptic, network-manager, etc. Actually becomes 100% non-systemd, whereby with the above "dist-upgrade" seem to have some systemd traces.

Thanks - downloading now.

P.S. Surprised that I'm the only one interested so far.
Will report on this thread when I have it running (possibly tomorrow).

The Interest / aim is in finding a replacement for systemd-shim in buster, not stretch. :) With this respin, to know if MX tools and functions are still working. Waiting for your feedback.

OK, posting from the live (USB) respin now.
So far so good.

Still working after applying 3 upgrades.

Codecs installer cannot connect (not surprising).

Thanks, also in my test it works well. Only inconvenience that its currently running completely by Devuan repos.

I think MX devs prefer Debian, which I also do. So, we need to find what packages in Devuan makes things work, and make mx-devuan backport, as I tried with the 8 packages. Or to use antiX repo + devuan packages which enable to run all DE including Gnome. Its a "try and error" process.

Thanks for taking interest in this effort.

IMHO Devuan is very usable already, but not yet by newbies (or perpetual newbies like me).

Installed on hd

Have installed Seamonkey from (temporarily enabled) AntiX repo: seems to be working OK.
Installed claws-mail OK from Devuan default repos.

Here is the final fully functional ascii respin (v0.3) based on MX18.3. Includes 2 MX and 3 Devuan repos. Once beowulf (buster) is stable, easy to upgrade by changing the repos.
