Can Gnome Shell work without systemd?

For issues with MX that has been modified from the initial install. Example: adding packages that then cause issues.

[ADDED] looking at your earlier screenshot, I noticed you had some waterfox repos, one of which was for Ubuntu16.04. That's already a significant gotcha, I believe, as the gtk+ version for Ubuntu 16.04 is 3.18

https://packages.ubuntu.com/source/xenial/gtk+3.0

Debian Stretch/MX17 is on gtk 3.22 and the Gnome desktop packages will be using gtk 3.22. Remember, Ubuntu is not Debian.

Waterfox was installed via MXPI

Thanks for the info.

I'm wondering about the 1st repo below. Was it automatically added? Seems strange for both repos to be required. But I'll leave the expert assessment to the Devs who made the Popular Apps list for MXPI.

I was also able to install it ok.

so I think maybe its something else.

what does

Code: Select all

apt-cache showpkg libglib2.0-bin
give the OP.

lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 - MX-23
FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

What abut trying to remove that file (is it installed already?)

You can simulate with

Code: Select all

apt-get remove -s libglib2.0-bin
http://www.youtube.com/runwiththedolphin
lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 - MX-23
FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

Code: Select all

apt-get remove -s libglib2.0-bin

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt-get remove -s libglib2.0-bin

No, it was/is not already installed; and when I do try to install it I get:

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt install libglib2.0-bin
[sudo] password for :

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 libglib2.0-bin : Depends: libglib2.0-0 (= 2.50.3-2) but 2.56.1-2~mx17+1 is to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

Just so you know, I'm not real worried about install Gnome DE, I just wanted to try it out. I thought just in case someone else is running into similar situation I would bring it to the attention of you all...
