[SOLVED] AMD Ryzen MX Freezes on Reboot After Update/Upgrade

#1 Post by porkfriedmike »

Hey All, I recently installed an AMD Ryzen 3 2200G with Vega graphics on the cpu. Did a fresh install MX-17.1_x64 April release. Everything running fine till upgrade (180 pkgs). Freezes on reboot, lots of 120 second timeouts, won't reach login screen. After another fresh install I held back upgrading this one pkg of the 180 and everything is running fine. (firmware-amd-graphics 20180518-1~mx17+1). Previous pkg (firmware-amd-graphics 20170823-1mx17+1) no issues. Hope this helps out anyone with the new APU.

I just read that the brand new 4.18 kernel has lots of improvements for Ryzen and especially for Vega graphics.

Thanks for the info sunrat. I think I'm running 4.15.0 (not at the Ryzen box right now) I'll check it out later.

UPDATE: Installed 4.17+95~mx17+1 kernel and it works fine with the old graphics pkg (firmware-amd-graphics 20170823-1mx17+1)
Then I installed the previously held back pkg (firmware-amd-graphics 20180518-1~mx17+1) that froze system on reboot with the 4.15.0.1 kernel and
everthing is beautiful, running great. Tip of the cap to sunrat.

porkfriedmike,

How good is Vega graphics with the upgrade? I am running a AMD Ryzen 5 1500X, and keep thinking about a new build with the 2400G but then keep looking at a Acer Laptop Aspire 3 A315-41-R8UU AMD Ryzen 5 2500U (2.00 GHz) tis possible to find under $500.

Sorry for late reply, been busy. Graphics are great! I'm not a computer gamer so I don't know what this can handle doing that, but I've experienced no problems with vlc movies, multiple Firefox browsers with 25+ tabs, you tube and way too much stuff running and opened at the same time. Impressive for a sub $100 processor.

We have a backported Debian 4.18.5 kernel in the test repo, and I just uploaded a Liquorix 4.18-4, if you're looking for a 4.18 kernel. We also are adding a newer set of firmware packages in testing, too.

Cool! Stevo I'll try them out and see if anything breaks. I'm new to posting so everyone let me know if I screw up or post to the wrong place.
