Forum change to "Ranks" verbiage
Forum change to "Ranks" verbiage
Triggered by users' requests and concerns, the Mods have re-examined the Forum's system of user ranks (the words and pyramids that appear right below your username when you post). The system in place has not been looked at since it was inherited from the original MEPIS Forum almost 10 years ago.
We found some big problems:
When it was set up originally, MEPIS was the only OS on the Forum, and now we have MX and antiX using it as well
The rating labels being used mixed objective (such as "MEPIS Novice," based on number of posts) and subjective (such as "MEPIS rocks!") terms
Any subjective evaluations should, by definition, be under user control*
After discussions, the Mods have approved a new system of rank labels that is based solely on the objective number of posts, and is OS-neutral:
Forum Novice (up to 100 posts)
Forum Regular (101-1000 posts)
Forum Guide (1001 to 3000 posts)
Forum Veteran (over 3000 posts)
We hope this makes sense to the Community, and that people are content with the new system.
*Note that users can put any subjective expression they want (within the limits of the Rules) in their signature.

Re: Forum change to "Ranks" verbiage
Although I'm not a big proponent of ranking people and such, I think it's helpful for newcomers to be able to make a quick assessment of a person who is offering advice. Not that making a lot of posts necessarily makes you an expert, but having a lot of pyramids might at least show a high level of interest and commitment to the forum.
I think Rich's idea is good. Substituting "Forum" for "MEPIS" makes a lot of sense inasmuch as most of the recent postings don't involve MEPIS. The Novice, Regular, Guide, and Veteran labels are inoffensive. They shouldn't offend anyone.

It was not my idea, but the consensus of the Mod team, and the initial verbiage came from Jerry. Credit where credit is due.

And if someone post 2000 posts of total nonsense, do they get a special prize? Just asking. :lipsrsealed: Off thread, I mean.
