I use touchpad-indicator (in the repos) to take care of that on my Lenovo.

Daughter and family are at the Escalante National Monument, Utah, and I thought this picture of hers made a nice sort of "Western Dao" (b/c the power is in the empty center) for my MXFB.

BTW: I see that Debian Trixie has 23.3.5 downloadable and you could see if that installs and runs correctly.
