Re: Cautionary backup story

you'll certainly get a lot more life out of the top quality discs, but they don't last forever. archiving companies, like iron mountain, have been rethinking the use of optical discs for longterm storage because they do fail.

Re: Cautionary backup story

if you really have sensitive stuff that you absolutely cannot afford to lose, ever, uncle mark's approach, along with some form of offsite backup is really what you would need. keep in mind that if you use DVDs or CDs as backup media that these don't last as long as everyone originally had predicted...

Re: Cautionary backup story

not saying don't use them, the lesson about symlinks is to understand that there may be unforeseen issues. too often people use them because it provides a quick fix for certain types of problems, e.g. software that was packaged for a different platform, placing data in a different location, etc. i u...

Re: Cautionary backup story

symlinks are a great asset and can solve a lot of problems, but it's often better to find out why something isn't working and fix it, then use symlinks to solve the problem because the unseen consequences, like this, can bite you when you least expect it.

have to admit, though, i still do like kde3 too. not enough to go back, though, mind you. :)

Re: Post a message with a leading slash

improving the regular expressions that, when a match is found, trigger events is still on the list to research. ideally, using code tags for something that is, essentially code and not have to use bold on single letters is what is being aimed for. but right now, i have regenerative biology and advan...

Re: Post a message with a leading slash

it's an awesome piece of software called modsecurity. it's essentially a web application firewall - instead of sniffing packets it looks at payloads. what it helps prevent are things like sql injection attacks, well known attacks, as well as providing a level of protection against unknown/undocument...

Re: Post a message with a leading slash

wouldn't necessarily call it a problem, rather it's a security check that prevents hacker from downloading stuff from the server and/or using our servers to download stuff from elsewhere on the net. the slash checking rule was modified, but modifying the rule for w get is a bit trickier because it c...

Re: Post a message with a standalone or leading slash

i've found the source of the error. it's a security feature that needs to be tweaked. it is not forum software related.
