ok, so sudo should work as long as you know what your user (not root) password is. if you need to change to a root terminal, from a regular terminal do su and supply your root (admin) password. then run the dkpg-configure -a. it is safe to accept the default on the virtual-box question. I think the main problem is that you can't log into your user account. the admin/root account does not have a conky set up by default. It can be done though, by running mx-conky, which will import the conky files into your home folder. then run the conky-toggle. but the real problem is why can't you...
