We use root because...well we just always have. As.you seen, sudo is also configured, although you can also use the root account for those same chores. As to security, I don't see a big problem as long as you don't hand out your password. Well, I'm the only user of my pc, so I set the same password...

Yes gnome still requires systemd. But we have systemd installed so it should work. Check out desktop environments in mx-packageinstaller ->popular apps. I believe there is a gnome setup in there.

I made a snapshot of my system and then created a live usb. Worked great. The live usb remembered most of my settings, i.e. email, login, etc. However, after I added persistence then I had to setup email, dropbox, etc. like I started over.
