Re: Should I switch to MX?

Okay, let's check that: what's the current repo version of GIMP? I've been running it from a Snap for a good while, because the version in the repos compatible with Ubuntu 16.04 was ancient. I was just playing with the KDE version of MX Live, and it's gotten back most of what I recall liking about t...

Re: Should I switch to MX?

I don't have any oddball hardware, but I'd surely do that anyway. What I'm asking about is whether MX specifically will make the seemingly unavoidable version upgrades easier than, say, Ubuntu, where a so-called "upgrade" strongly resembles a slightly automated clean install.

Should I switch to MX?

I started using Linux full time in 2011, after the second time my Windows XP became infected with FBI Moneypak (budget computing -- live antivirus was too much of a performance hit). I started with MEPIS 11, chosen mainly because it had a similar interface to Windows 95/98/XP Classic. Over the inter...

Re: MX-14 beta 2

Yep, I've got two machines in the house that can only run 32-bit (both currently on antiX 13.2). I was checking whether MX might replace MEPIS for me (having a more current kernel and other parts might, for instance, allow installing Pepper Flash, which won't go on MEPIS 11). There's a pepperflashp...

Re: MX-14 beta 2

Wow, this looks like it could be a good candidate to replace antiX on my second desktop machine, maybe even in place of MEPIS on my quad-core -- but I have a question: the mention of a PAE kernel seems to imply MX is 32-bit (if 64-bit, it wouldn't need PAE to access large RAM installation). Is ther...

Re: Cautionary backup story

Okay, I'm convinced -- I've got two external drives, at least one of which is reliable (the other had a failure and has some bad blocks most likely related to the computer it was mounted in falling out of a van onto concrete, but with the bad blocks marked/locked out, it should be okay); neither one...
