[Solved] Unable to Disable Chrome Gnome-keyring

#1 Post by rej »

Hi-

I am hoping someone can help me resolve this.

What has always worked for getting rid of Chrome-keyring:

Comment out Auto-login user - line 66 - etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

reboot

open Chrome - close chrome

"Passwords & Keys" Unlock login - delete Chrome keys - folder empty

reboot

uncomment Auto-login user line 66 etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

No more keyring - never a problem...

------------------

Before updating - no Chrome keyring - after updating, keyring is requested.

I have tried everything I have read in the MX forum gnome-keyring-unlocked, etc., and online - many times. Nothing has worked.

and

- Delete local home keyrings folder
- uninstall libpam-gnome-keyring

It still wants a Chrome password on reboot.

antiX 21 [base] with Chrome & MX 21 Fluxbox with Chrome, are on the same computer without this issue.

I have tried various MX 21 snapshots from testing window managers and desktops, weeks ago and as soon as it is updated Chrome wants a keyring password (4x).

Maybe if I install XFCE on FluxBox partition, Redshift will work and I can use MX that way. It has the same version of Chrome.

Does MX21 have a "base" iso?

You could try this: https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php ... 52#p669152

As far as the gnome-keyring goes, did you try to unlock the keyring as per the Wiki?
https://mxlinux.org/uncategorized/gnome-keyring/
It may not work after your other modifications.

Did you read this?

Antediluvian-

Thanks for the links - I think "Bare" is Systemd only, but interesting - will likely try it out when the dust settles .

And yes, as stated, I read and downloaded the Gnome-Keyring-Unlocked.pdf and tried other approaches, such as trying to do the opposite of "how to enable", removing libpam-gnome-keyring, and suggestions online.

The way I have done it successfully for years no longer works on this device with MX21. Also tried deleting the keyring passwords, deleting the local home keyrings folder, then uninstalling Seahorse - it still wanted passwords after reboot.

Before the updates [included in above post] there was not a keyring issue.

If the device is prompted to sleep mode manually, some functions do not operate after waking, unless the browser is closed before, and don't want to deal with keyring that many times a day.

I never store passwords, actual credit cards (virtual acct #s), personal information of any kind, or login names on any browser, application, or thumb drives. The browser opens to "Firejail" and has blockers galore. I've installed and started to use Chromium and Firefox-esr (crashing, syncing and translation issues) - but the Chromium simplicity is appealing.

All the options that I disable are already default but Chromium has the same keyring to resolve...

Still trying to fix it and wanted to thank you fot the links - had no idea what these "keyrings" were for, now I know that people store this type of information in their browsers. Being used to just going into the settings and turning most of it off, didn't connect the dots.

Jerry's post from 2018 does not seem to work, at least on the 2 laptops I tried it on - the options shown are not there. Keyrings come back on a reboot.

Is there a way to remove or disable the entire keyrings application, like in antiX - it seems to be set for use, but not enabled?

Edit:

Found the solution online to uninstall "gnome-keying" and "seahorse" - don't know if that would classify as "resolved". But no more keyrings.

Re: Unable to Disable Chrome Gnome-keyring

#4 Post by fehlix »

The question raised is a bit two-fold formulated.

The question may be read either as:

A) How to disabled gnome-keyring related features completely,
B/c the keyring is used not only by chromium-based browser,
but can be used to store other information, like network-credentials,
it's important to know that other tools cannot use keying anymore if diabled.
Also the Password&Kes tool is used not only for gnome-keyring
but for other encryption keys.

B) You just want avoid to "unlock" when chromium (or chromium-based browser) starts,
b/c with autologin chrome insists to save it's master-key somewhere protected.

In case of A) :

Code: Select all

sudo apt purge gnome-keyring
may help.
Chrome would now use it's "fallback" basic "cleartext-alike" store,
to save any login related information easy to be read with some tools.

In case of B):
Use either of this two way:
B.1) Keep gnome-keyring, but "force chrome/ium to use it's basic store:
use commandline flag "--password-store=basic" with the desktop starter of the browser:
Exec=/usr/bin/chromium --password-store=basic %U
( and potentially also within Xfce helper for the default application)

or:
B.2) Make gnome-keyring unprotected by making keyring password empty:
Open Password&Keys and change Login-keyring password to be empty.

Also both above cases any saved information (protected by chromium) would be available to read out unprotected.
+++EDIT+++ case B) => B1 or B2

Thank you fehlix-

Case "B" is what I want. However it seems that no matter what I do, after deleting the keys, open browser, no request for password, reboot, request for password is back.

After 3 days of trying every method I could find, I uninstalled gnome-keyring and seahorse - no more requests.
-------------

"( and potentially also within Xfce helper for the default application)"

I don't know what Xfce helper is.

-------------
So, to try Case "B":

reinstalled gnome-keyring and seahorse

edited .desktop launchers: 1&2

deleted keys: 3&4

empty keys: 5

checked browsers - no more keyrings.
-------------
reboot & keyring requests return...

Did I do it incorrectly?

No.
1st: Where did you read, to change anything as "root".
B/c any package update, will revert your changes, if you manully change system wide files, provided by packages.

2nd: Thanks, for the pictures, but that nothing I can use to edit text to show you your mistakes.
Better post you changes made as text, so you may, see it's easier to see what potentially is wrong.

3rd: either use B1 or B2

In case B1:
For B1 change back you changes. After that I'll provide a command line, to make it properly,
for both the launcher in the menu and the Default-application helper providing the mime-type,
in case you click on a link to open (which would not use the changes within the menu made)

In case B2:
You may have missed how to make the login-keyring password empty.

fehlix-

Sorry to take up your time with this. I misunderstood your instruction and am not experienced at this type of adjustment.

I had manually edited the .desktop launchers in usr/share/applications Chrome and Chromium "Properties" - "Launcher".

There was only that one small line of text within the launcher [in the picture - red rectangle around what was added].

I did not read to do it as root, but could not change it without opening Thunar as root to do it.

They are now changed back to the way it was before doing so.

There are no stored passwords, addresses or any logins in the browsers, and don't want to be asked for a password every time they are opened. It used to be easy to delete the Chrome keyrings, and after the recent update [posted in code above], that has changed.

The passwords get deleted, it is empty and then they return on a reboot.

Can you tell me how to properly delete them, just so the browser does not ask for keyring password?

OK, let's do this way:
B.2) Make gnome-keyring unprotected by making keyring password empty:
Open Password&Keys and change Login-keyring password to be empty.
Do those steps:
* Close all applications inclding any browser
* Logout and login again, by entering your normal login password
* Open Password & Key and click on the left-arrow in the upper left corner of the window,
to get the list of keyrings.
PK01.jpg
* Right-Click on the login-keyring and select Change password
PK03.jpg
* Enter you normal user-password to unlock
PK031.jpg
* Change login-keyring passwd to be "empty", which is don't enter any password
PK04.jpg
* Click continue to get this warning about your unprotected keyring
PK05.jpg
( Note: For the record, that's not what I do recommend to do. )
Now open chromium, and it will store/create and use it's master-key to save any sensible data encrypted, but the master key is readable by anyone/anytool who has access to the pc.
