Thunderbird acting WEIRD

#1 Post by grasshopper »

I don't recall any recent updates of Thunderbird but it's not acting like it ever has before and I've used it for a very long time.

When I opened it up..it says it has to download 100% of all the inbox headers..but this was already done long time ago, it is like it "forgot" this.. but the messages are still there..and it won't actually "update" it just sits there.

THEN When I go to open any folder it says "deleting messages'... WTF?! I never told it to delete anything and now it is trying to do it automatically... NEVER EVER before, been using thunderbird since it came out.

Any clues? Did malware make it into the repos?

Thanks for providing your Quick System Info.

Have you been keeping the system updated?

Installed anything recently that we wouldn't be able to tell from your QSI?

What version of Thunderbird do you have installed?

Have to ask... well because. Have you opened any emails and attachments that you maybe shouldn't have?

the chances of that are less than catching COVID in outer space :p

if you email is also accessible via web interface, you might want to check to see if anything is going on server side.

I should check server side, will do. slow cust. serve.

I keep it updated as the updates appear, I don't recall anything that looked like it should interfere..i cannot recall any specific update correlation to the issue itself, my memory does not serve me there. I have installed a bunch of browsers recently from mx package installer..almost all of them. But only browsers. Thunderbird version 68.12.0 (64-bit)

Also, though I doubt it's related but thought I should mention it, If I run Steam..everything works fine but then I cannot shut down the desktop normally, it just hangs and then gives me an error if I try to shutdown again. Opening another terminal and halt'ing/init'ing works to shut it down normally but am forced to do that that. I assumed this would work itself out in another update so never mentioned it here..but again, thought I should mention it.

You have a thread for this already here viewtopic.php?p=669127#p669127 which has sat for a week now.

@grasshopper check account settings -> Synchronization & Storage if radio button is set to Don't delete any messages
I could swear that this default setting changed. I learned this the hard way on my kid's computer after reinstall (but it's still set to Don't delete on my computer)

Yup. Wonder if it's related.
probably not directly, Steam is most likely not affecting shutting down or Thunderbird, and Thunderbird is most likely not affecting Steam or shutting down.

this thread needs to stick to your Thunderbird issue

your drive is getting kinda filled, its not that bad yet, but you should look at maybe running MX Cleanup or other things

Code: Select all

Partition: ID-1: / raw size: 116.32 GiB size: 114.00 GiB (98.00%) used: 91.45 GiB (80.2%)

in order to troubleshoot more info is needed, things like:
- number of email accounts, RSS feeds, etc that its being used we - we don't need to know them just need to know if you have just a few or like dozens
- are you using a lot of extensions? any specific ones that could be causing issues?
- have you changed or done anything within Thunderbird that could cause this?
- have you checked to see if your email providers have changed anything on their end?

you should probably run Thunderbird from a terminal as that could provide some info, but I found two examples quick of some options to use as well

Starts Thunderbird in safe mode, i.e. disabling all extensions and showing a bit more debugging messages.

Code: Select all

thunderbird --safe-mode
Starts Thunderbird in safe mode, i.e. disabling all extensions and showing a bit more debugging messages.

Code: Select all

thunderbird --g

Someone may ask for specific configuration info, Thunderbird has some under Help > Troubleshooting info (this info doesn't really have sensitive stuff in it) but it shows things like modified preferences. But before any of that, please answer the above, and try to run Thunderbird from a terminal.

Firefox just had some weird problem concerning http3 and supposedly the solution was to disable it. I don't use firefox directly but I do use palemoon via librewolf and also waterfox. Http3 was enabled, and still is on both. I was on the net last night/yesterday and saw zero issues. This morning however I started getting some strange issues with my network itself cutting out and in repeatedly, incl. ridiculously slow speeds both local and abroad. I just updated the firmware on my routers and thought it was that but I'm not sure it was at all.
Firefox has a "mitmdetection.services.mozilla.com" url it connects to constantly as well as "push.services.mozilla.com". Also there is one other I blocked as well: "detectportal.firefox.com". I also started blocking "detectportal.palemoon.org" which Basilisk uses. All of these except for 'maybe' the push services one are used for data collection/telemetry, which btw is/was part of the problem with the http3 nonsense as firefox is big into telemetry. Plus they have the new VPN service as well which I'd rather not fiddle with at this point. Firefox has become a bloated affair IMO and because of this all their services, so to speak, are flaky. Thunderbird which is part of the mozilla suite is in the same boat unfortunately.
I mean a headline with people complaining about their browser not working is obviously a mozilla issue I would seek to avoid at all costs. detectportal and push service is totally unnecessary, at least for me. At one point I assumed I had to allow it to connect to the portals in order for the dern things to work. Now I know better.

@davidy none of that has any relation to the OPs issue.

If the OP is going to fix their actual issue, they need to provide the requested info and attempt to identify the cause, anything else just confuses things.
