What the heck happened to the post by CrackMeUp that gave me the instructions for fixing this problem with Firefox and Thunderbird? It was there last night but when I tried to look at it this morning, it was gone. How can I find out what happened to it? If it was deleted, why?

The user CrackMeUp was banned earlier, under another name. And not allowed to post at this forum.

@Falcon
Sorry for the inconvenience ... things have been straightened up with Admin regarding my user credentials, but unfortunately the post no longer exists ... I will reconstruct it before the end of the afternoon ... hang in there till then ... it does work ... have had to do it it on a number of installations in the past ...

You know what? Rather than having to rewrite a full tutorial on fixing your problem, it would be quicker and more convenient for me if you send me a copy of these two files and I assume you know how to access invisible folders/files in your Home directory:

(1) home/(user)/.config/mimeapps.list
(2) home/(user)/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list

Since both files have the same name, please clearly identify their placement when you send them ...

I'll alter them for you and return them as replacements to get you up and running straight-away ... after that, an explanation as to what I did and why ... thanks in advance

Have you tried this? (I just jumped in at the end here...)

How To Get Thunderbird To Open Web Links In Default Browser
https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/1391

https://www.lifewire.com/change-the-def ... rd-2532751

Go to Thunderbird Menu: Edit-->Preferences

Click Config Editor
Search for the following 3 entries:
network.protocol-handler.warn-external.http
network.protocol-handler.warn-external.https
network.protocol-handler.warn-external.ftp
and double click to true.

$ sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser

CrackMeUp,

I'm not sure exactly how to send you the files, and you don't really need to go through a whole tutorial or explanation of why the changes are needed (although that might be nice at some point). Since I'm pretty new to Linux, it might be good for me to get the experience of making these changes myself. I hope this won't be more difficult for you to do it this way, but I would appreciate it if you could.

@manyroads
The second link (Lifewire) will work, but only if http/https entries appear in TB Prefs/Attachments/Content ... the caveat still remains that (and we shall see when Falcon posts his files) Thunderbird adding itself to the http/https x-scheme-handlers in the mimeapps-list(s) ... causes the problem ... once the lists are cleaned/edited/purged of the offending app (Thunderbird) all will be fine-and-dandy. The ONLY x-scheme-handler in the mimeapps.list(s) for thunderbird.desktop should be x-scheme-handler/mailto=thunderbird.desktop. As far as the other web x-scheme-handlers are concerned, they should only point to a designated browser, in this case, userapp-Firefox-XXXX.desktop as first in the list followed by any secondary browser. Then after the texts are saved (followed by logout/in, you click on a link in TB and FF will open asking you to "Make Default Browser", uncheck the box for "Automatically check ...." and then push "Not now" (this last step, courtesy of dolphin_oracle).

@Jerry3904
Definitely! ... except for the caveat I spoke about above ...

@Falcon
OK let's do this the easy way ... please copy/paste the contents of the first file I requested ... home/you/.config/mimeapps.list so it can be verified that your case is what I think is happening ...
