appimage (Share useful apps & your experiences)

Those who have created deb or tar packages to share with other MEPIS users can create a thread in this forum to do that. Also those that request someone to create a package for them, can be posted here.

appimage (Share useful apps & your experiences)

appimages...
I thought I'd start a thread where folks can share appimages they are using, testing, deleting, or whatever. :eek:

I have just downloaded a couple of new and interesting, to me, applications. They may be available in other forms, but I prefer testing with appimages because they seem not to break things. Because they are all open source you can be assured my sales commission will increase my personal wealth enormously. :snail:

Anyway here are the three new appimages I'm trying:

Qtractor: (a music production environment built on QT
Qtractor is an Audio/MIDI multi-track sequencer application written in C++ with the Qt framework. Target platform is Linux, where the Jack Audio Connection Kit (JACK) for audio, and the Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) for MIDI, are the main infrastructures to evolve as a fairly-featured Linux desktop audio workstation GUI, specially dedicated to the personal home-studio.

Notable: Notes (quoting the dev)
The markdown-based note-taking app that doesn't suck. I couldn't find a note-taking app that ticked all the boxes I'm interested in: notes are written and rendered in GitHub-flavored Markdown, no WYSIWYG, no proprietary formats, I can run a search & replace across all notes, notes support attachments, the app isn't bloated, the app has a pretty interface, tags are indefinitely nestable and can import Evernote notes.

Jitsi Meet:
"Go ahead, video chat with the whole team. In fact, invite everyone you know. Jitsi Meet is a fully encrypted, 100% open source video conferencing solution that you can use all day, every day, for free — with no account needed."

Appimage is my favorite concept for the stand alone appli (with usually all needed libraries inside), it's useful into the user's sessions. So it is independent of the platform/admin.
But here, into MX/antiX no need to have some extra appimages, Stevo, Mike, Time and the team fill the big repositories. ;-) ... except to do some tests before.

EDIT: I use XnViewMP Appimage (or deb).
https://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?f=82&t=38465
"XnView MP is the enhanced version of XnView Classic. It is a powerful picture viewer, browser and converter for Windows, Mac and Linux. This software can read more than 500 formats change picture size, reduce picture file size and much more!"

I run Avidemux from an appimage.
It works well.
Avidemux is a free video editor designed for simple cutting, filtering and encoding tasks. It supports many file types, including AVI, DVD compatible MPEG files, MP4 and ASF, using a variety of codecs.

I've been using this one for quite some time now https://cerebroapp.com/ Search everything in few clicks. On your machine or in the Internet. I find it really useful. Also, https://kate-editor.org/get-it/ I don't think Kate needs introductions still here it is Kate is a multi-document editor part of KDE since release 2.2. Being a KDE application, Kate ships with network transparency, as well as integration with the outstanding features of KDE. Choose it for viewing HTML sources from konqueror, editing configuration files, writing new applications or any other text editing task. You still need just one running instance of Kate. I've been using Kate back from my Windows time and really like it.
Without each other's help there ain't no hope for us :happy:

@Moltke. Yes, Kate is an excellent editor. The appimage is a more efficient way of installing it I am sure. I installed KDE Standard with MXPI and Late it came in. But I also use Dolphin and some other KDE apps. Probably could have installed most with an appimage.

Found this really! neat tutorial on how to use appImages with ZERO system integration ... some member wrote this a while back ... can't find him on the forums ... read his other posts and the fellow really has his sh%t together ...
I have created a brief guide on how to manage and menu-integrate AppImages ...

What I do is to create a folder called "CoolApps" in my HOME folder renaming it to make it invisible (.CoolApps). This contains folders of all my AppImages (make sure you right-click the app for permissions to make it executable!). These folders contain the image and an icon (png) for the app (32x32px, which I create myself). Then create a launcher using a basic text editor like this:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Avidemux
Exec=/home/(your username)/.CoolApps/Avidemux/avidemux_2.7.0.appImage
Icon=/home/(your username)/.CoolApps/Avidemux/Avidemux-logo.png
Terminal=false
Categories=Video;
Comment=Quick video edits

Then save your text file (in the example for Avidemux) as Avidemux.desktop and place it in /home/(user)/.local/share/applications/ ... it will show up after re-login in your specified menu entry ... easy-peasy. (I keep a copy of this text file as a template for creating launchers for other images.)

If a new version of an AppImage becomes available then simply replace the old one in your specific .CoolApps folder, make it executable, then alter the "Exec=" in your launcher (/home/(user)/.local/share/applications/).

If you don't like the App or find it buggy, simply delete everything you created and it's gone (delete the .config entry for the App in question as well)!
I followed this advice and am using Avidemux, Etcher, Fotowall, Krita, Mindomo, Openshot, RawTherapee, Shotcut, SynfigStudio ... ALL run flawlessly ... I like the fact that he insists users go directly to the specific app's website to get the image instead of relying on third-party compilations (citing Musescore) as an example ... Cool! ... also while using AppImages, he says (in another post) that he always answers NO when an app wants to integrate itself to the system ... way cool!
