If I run the Snapshot I burnt to a USB flash stick and install from it, is there a way to save everything that's on the /home section already on the hard drive, or do I have to save that (about 40 GB) to another flash stick first, then do a fresh install?
Yes.
Boot the Snapshot that you have on the USB stick.
Open Thunar, then open (mount if necessary) the install on the hard drive,
or the /home partition which contains the data.

Select the data to save, then copy it from /home to a suitably sized other USB.
If you have sufficient space on the bootable USB then you can copy it there.

No, you don't need to copy the system files, only the /home/<your_user> folder
that you wish to save. You may copy any other data that seems pertinent.

Sorry guys, but I decided to re-install via a recent Snapshot, it was too stressful switching back and forth between two distros. Guess we'll never know what happened to the previous grub to make the password request to keep looping.

There may be a clue to the experts though : first off, I re-installed and told it to keep the /home files but it failed to install grub correctly in the MBR so the computer wouldn't start at all from the hard drive. I then did another re-install, but without keeping the /home files, and this time it all worked beautifully. Only downer now is copying everything back from the USB flash stick; still I have a working system again, so I'm happy!

Thanks for all the help that was offered, sorry your time was wasted!
