Battery powered booting weird problem

#1 Post by grelos » Wed Jul 04, 2018 4:12 am

Hi guys, I am facing a weird issue when booting with my laptop without the power supply, that means with battery power only.
Everything works well when booting with power cable on.

laptop specs:
https://www.asus.com/Laptops/ASUS-FX753 ... fications/
mine is with 7700HQ and SSD.

Whenever I boot with battery power only, it boots to TTY. From there, after logging in, I get stuck with such a error:
"watchdog: BUG soft Lockup - CPU #x (can be 2, 3 or whatever) stuck for 23s"

Few more info:
  • I have not installed Nvidia drivers.
  • If I boot in Advanced Mode then Systemd, I do not get TTY, getting lightdm greeter as usual but then after typing password the system get stuck and I have to hard switch it off with power button.
  • Booting as usual and then typing e and then adding nomodeset in booting menu, system boots with full brightness and it's not possible to adjust it afterwards. That's somehow correct because no drivers are loaded.

Based on above, I suspect it's something related to the usual nvidia mess.
I use this bulky laptop as a desktop basically, so it's not a big problem, but I am interested in digging more into it.

Any advice how to investigate further?

Thank you

What is the output of this command as regular user:

Code: Select all

inxi -G
Production: 4.15.0-1-amd64, MX-17.1, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 8 GB, Kingston SSD 120 GB and WesternDigital 1TB
Testing: AAO 722: 4.15.0-1-386. MX-17.1, AMD C-60 APU, 4 GB

When booting with power supply on:

Code: Select all

Graphics: Card-1: Intel driver: i915 v: kernel
Card-2: NVIDIA driver: nouveau v: kernel
           Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.2 driver: intel resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Kabylake GT2 v: 4.5 Mesa 13.0.6
When booting on battery power with nomodeset booting option then it's:

Code: Select all

Graphics: Card-1: Intel driver: i915 v: N/A
           Card-2: NVIDIA driver: nouveau v: N/A
           Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.2 driver: intel resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Kabylake GT2 v: 4.5 Mesa 13.0.6

When booting with battery power with default booting, I do not know because after logging in in TTY I get stuck with that error message and I do not know where to type "inxi -G"

it might be a quirky bug with your hardware and the 4.15 kernel in MX 17. With Kaby Lake, I think the stock Debian 4.9 kernel might be too old, so can you try adding a 4.16 or 4.17 (latest Liquorix) kernel from the Package installer to see if those get rid of the bug?

Possibly a BIOS update might fix it on your machine if those newer kernels don't help.

Ok, thanks. I am going to update kernel and report back.

Just to be 100% sure: is the right liquorix kernel this one?

That's always the latest Liquorix kernel from the test repo, so that's going to be 4.17.3-based. I say go for that. If you decide to add DKMS drivers later such as the proprietary Nvidia video driver, you should enable our test repo to get versions that work with the latest kernels...but that depends on whether the new kernel fixes the problem.

Just FYI, you keep the stock kernel as a boot option until you manually uninstall it, so you won't be stranded with the new kernel if it has any problems. So it's safe to test a new one.

Even with liquorix this problem persists. I get different error messages than before but still can't boot.

By the way, with liquorix (and power supply :p ) it boots much quicker than with 4.15.
