Strange -- can't access Distrowatch content

#1 Post by uncle mark » Thu May 31, 2018 6:51 pm

Running Mepis 11. (I know, I know.) Using Firefox ESR 45.2.0 installed from a mikeinsantarosa .deb. This is a recent (I think I first noticed it when trying to read this Monday's DWW) phenomenon.

Distrowatch is one of my startup tabs. It loads fine when the browser is loaded. However, if I click on any link on the page, I get:

Code: Select all

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /10219 on this server.
And if I hit the Back button to return to the home page, I get:

Code: Select all

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access / on this server.
Have cleared all distrowatch cookies and cleared cache.

Got clue?

No, this has been going on since Monday or Tuesday.

I just tried something -- closed the browser, relaunched, and DW came up fine as one of my startup tabs. Then I closed that tab, opened a new tab, typed in distrowatch.com... and got hit with the Forbidden 403 page.

My M11 has FF ESR 45.9.0 and DW is working fine for me on it.
Try looking in synaptic for updates?

Maybe this:

Code: Select all

Open the History Manager <Control><Shift> H.
In the search bar, enter the name of the site.
Right click on one of the listings and select Forget About This Site.
This should remove all information, including any passwords / settings.

A longshot - only time I had anything remotely like this was when the date/time auto update went haywire and I was 6 and a bit years out of date. Could not access several commonly used sites.
Homebrew64 bit Intel duo core 2 GB RAM, 120 GB Kingston SSD, Seagate1TB.
Primary OS : MX-17.1 64bit. Also MX17, Kubuntu14.04 & Puppy 6.3.
Dell9010, MX-17.1, Win7

Skipped M11 for the same reason, firefox only working partially. There was always some page elements not loading correctly on the web pages.
Worked very hard to keep it alive. Used a later kernel and applied lots of security fixes manually. Didn't help.
Now I'm using MX 16 with kde.

I have a similar problem when using my old Windows 3.2 system, do you suppose it might have anything to do with it being out of date?

Completely wild and improbable guess... could it be a redirection or cert failure?

http://distrowatch.com/ redirects to https now that they're SSL.
Son, someday all this will belong to your ex wife.
