I don't find nmap nor geany using apt-get or synaptic
With my MX-16. Can someone suggest how I can get these two?
I'd rather not get a big package, just these two for now.
TIA

Re: repo(s) for nmap & geany
FYI - nmap in antiX stretch repo is a newer version than the one in debian.

Question about default firewall settings for MX and antiX:
I have a question about the default firewall settings for MX
as opposed to those for antiX.
Using nmap, gufw of slightly different versions, I get a
difference I wouldn't expect: for antiX, all ports. or at least
the first 1000 are closed by default. Using the same gufw
firewall settings, there are three ports open by default
using MX.
I do not currently intend to interface with Windows, and have
not yet set up CUPs to interface with my printer.
Should the default be all ports closed in both cases, that
is, for equally so for MX as well as antiX?
Code: Select all
Comparing antiX 17b1 with MX 16.1
nmap version 7.60 6.47
gufw version 16.04.1 12.10.0
open ports zero three tcp (see below)
line 42** |<-- 1-byte diff -->|
** /etc/ufw/sysctl.conf files are identical except for
the the values of byte 1465 of each line 42 relating to
/net/ipv4/tcp_syncookies=?
PORT STATE SERVICE
111/tcp open rpcbind
139/tcp open netbios-ssn
445/tcp open microsoft-ds
as opposed to those for antiX.

Re: repo(s) for nmap & geany
That depends on what is using the ports.
For instance, mx ships with samba server while antix does not (it can be added later if need be.)

Thanks, D_O.
I should have figured that out.
Just surprised, since I had not activated CUPS or Samba myself.

for future installs, check out the "services" tab in the installer, which will let you shut down services you don't want.
Thanks!

I don't recall this option making my LiveUSB;

also didn't see a choice on Sessions & Startup which applied to Samba.
