Virtualbox 5.2

#1 Post by smilliken » Tue Oct 24, 2017 6:57 pm

I see VB 5.2 is out. New looking icons, but not sure of any other changes.

Chances of getting into the repos?

Builds are failing due to something in the configuration in checking for Qt 5. Part of this has the process compile little one-line bits of code to see if that works, and one fails and says it can't find the QtGlobal header, which is part of qtbase5-dev and is installed for our Qt5 5.3, but is still doesn't work.

You can still add Oracle's repository and get 5.2.0, but it seems it must have some Qt 5 mismatch compared to the 5.1 series, and it no longer follows the color scheme or the font sizes we have in xfce. Other than that, it works well. I think we may be able to build it for MX 17, but the Oracle version does not have the appearance problems with the newer Qt 5.

Not a problem. I can wait for MX17. I could download it from Oracle, but I find mixing original packages with those from the community repos just don't seem to get along.

Based on an Arch-based distro I have, the new VB 5.2 shows up very nicely in whatever gtk3 theme one is using. That means larger, blockier top bar and buttons as well, unfortunately (like how Adwaita gtk3 theme is blocky)

Following on from Stevo's posts above, may I clarify that if I install 5.2 straight from Oracle, I won't get the preinstalled nicely configured guest additions that MX set up in VB5.1? What about the preconfiguration that makes an MX Virtualbox host setup so easy and great?

Recently, because I hadn't seen any VB 5.2 entries in Synaptic despite Virtualbox itself informing me that 5.2 was available, I enabled the Oracle Repos.

But then I noticed that no 5.2 guest modules appeared in the repos.

This is a screenshot from Synaptic:

So, most of my distros have VB 5.2 installed, and I use Virtual Machines interchangeably across my distros, as in a VM made in distro X is run and updated in distro Y.

Would I mess up some settings in the VMs if I was running and updating them mainly in VB5.2 but then also ran/updated them in VB5.1 in MX16?

I find it much simpler to install and upgrade using the VB Repo directly. I find in the CR Repo there are too many different packages and find it a little confusing which one of the packages really needs to be installed/upgraded. With the VB packages, it one and when there is a new version the program prompts you and a way you go.

Virtualbox 5.2.12 is in the test repo. What's difficult about enabling the TR in the Package Installer and then searching for "virtualbox"?

It doesn't have any theme issues as far as I can tell, either.
