Clean install with Nvidia 1660 keeps getting borked

#1

Post by perdomot » Mon Jul 01, 2019 11:03 pm

I've installed MX 18.3 on my PC that's running a 1660 video card just fine but when I run updates including the 418 driver and reboot it hangs and only shows a blinking cursor. I've tried some of the advice on how to fix this found on the forums but nothing has worked so I installed Mint 19.1 and added the nvidia ppa to allow me to use the 430 drivers and the system is working fine. Still prefer to use MX but don't know how to get this done. Anyone dealt with this same issue?

Most people with Nvidia cards have good luck with the 390 driver found in the MX Testing repo. I would advise uninstalling the driver you got from Nvidia, removing their PPA, then running

Code: Select all

sudo apt autoremove --purge
then

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
in a terminal prior to installing 390. Or you could try using the open-source Nouveau driver and see how that works for you.

I did try the 390 driver first but it still didn't work.

Are you installing the 418 version from our test repo or with the .run file from Nvidia?

I used the built in Nvidia tool in the MX tool suite. I first tried the 390 driver and when that didn't work, I opted for the 418. When I decided to install Mint XFCE, their driver tool didn't even detect my 1660 card so I added the nvidia driver repo and got the 430.26 driver which has worked flawlessly. I want to go back to MX Linux because it was so good but this issue worries me. I was thinking of installing MX with my old 1050ti card first and once everything is installed switching in the 1660. Good idea?

Define "when that didn't work"?

Can you explain what you did and what output and such you got and what the result was?

Well things got interesting over the last week. After the 390 driver didn't work, I renamed the xorg.conf file to let me get back in and updated to the 418 driver without any other updates and the system booted. I ran the 37 updates afterwards and the system seems stable. I was doing the updates first before but just installing the 418 driver alone and then the updates seems to work. Hope this stability lasts a while.

Updates trash more O/S's than anything else on this planet, which is why I run several O/S in tandem
I also have a whole bunch of programs 'pinned' in Synaptic - make a Snapshot of the running system
immediately ... before it goes pear-shaped .... good sleuthing, Holmes :number1:

What do updates have to do with which driver he selected for installation?
