KBibTeX - Update Request - to stable version 0.8.1

#1 Post by nanoSYS »

Would it be possible to update KBibTeX (0.4.4 @ Synaptic) to the stable 0.8.1 version?

KBibTeX is a BibTeX editor (BibTeX-based reference manager) for KDE to edit bibliographies used with LaTeX.
Features include comfortable input masks, starting web queries (e. g. Google Scholar or BibSonomy) and exporting to PDF, PostScript, RTF and XML/HTML.

Thank you for considering my request.
Cheers!

I'll take a look at it. It seems to not need anything more than what we already have from Stretch.

@nanoSYS: unrelated - have you also tried pybliographer/ pybliographic, similar to KBibTeX, just Python/Gtk+ based (in case you don't use KDE on MX)? It should be in stretch repos.I used both during Uni time but finally only the last.

Another option could be to use Lyx as the front end of LateX, there is a Texlive package for bibliographies. Lyx runs very well on standard MX without KDE.
Backup: Dell9010, MX-19_B2, Win7, 120 SSD, WD 232GIB HD, 4GB RAM
Primary :Homebrew64 bit Intel duo core 2 GB RAM, 120 GB Kingston SSD, Seagate1TB.
MX-18.2 64bit. Also MX17, Kubuntu14.04 & Puppy 6.3.

+1:
--I used LyX+pybliographer/ Pybliographic to write my thesis + simple Gummi app for straight Latex.
--Kile+KBibTeX on KDE only.
--there is still, what was it (really long ago)TeXworks & Texmaker. Sould be (almost) all in stretch repos.

The MX User Manual was drafted in Lyx for a few years. Swapped to Libre office as it was easier for distribution to translators.

I still prefer Lyx for some jobs.

Thank you so much Stevo !! :number1:
I’ll give feedback by the end of the week.

Thank you both @aledie and @Gordon Cooper for your inputs/recommendations !!!
Some years ago on OSX, my reference manager (RM) of choice was Sente (discontinued, now), then Bookends for a while, but both came with a price tag, and OSX is long gone (for me).
After switching to Linux (Mint) 5yrs ago and to MX (3yrs ago) I’ve been using JabRef v3.8.2, (from 2017 Jan, unfortunately) as I cannot get the current stable v4.3.1 to run.
I also use cb2bib @repo, which I managed to update to version 2.0.0 from https://www.molspaces.com/cb2bib, yesterday.
I use Lyx occasionally, and Mendeley extensively, but this one is too 3rd party cloud dependent, for my taste, the reason why I want to try other RMs (and Zotero also comes w/ a price tag. No way!)

As there are other RMs for Linux available @repos, I picked KbibTex, reason why I requested an update for it.
There’s also an old version of Pybliographer @repo. I guess it’ll be my next choice.
Didn’t know about Kile and Gummi. I’ll give them a try.

I suppose that after trying KbibTex I’ll be requesting updates for Pybliographer and maybe Jabref. :worship:
Thank you guys!
Cheers!!

I'm sorry for the late feedback.
Regarding KBibTex, starting the program, a window pops up: "Could not start process Cannot talk to klauncher: "The name org.kde.klauncher5 was not provided by any .service files""

The solution is to install some extra kde “libraries” as suggested @ https://askubuntu.com/questions/617955/ ... g-to-15-04
But instead of messing around with random libraries I just installed kdenlive @test repos, which already includes the missing libraries, as suggested @ https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1504526.

After that, no more popup error windows, and the program runs smoothly with no further errors I could detect!
But, I guess that is to much kde, although it's not too heavy on ram.

While messing around with the KBibTex and trying to find a solution for the "popup error" I also managed to find out the solution to my particular problem, of JabRef not being able to run versions higher than 3.8.2.jar on MX.

The solution is quite simple, really, it needs to have installed openjfx @Synaptic, as suggested @http://discourse.jabref.org/t/jabref-4- ... table/1197 and also @https://www.scivision.co/install-jabref-linux/

After installing openjfx, all JabRef versions from 3.8.2, including stable 4.3.1 and master-snapshots, work wonderfully, even though it's a JAR file, but you can't have it all.
I'm quite pleased with both KBibTex and JabRef, especially the latter.
The JabRef versions can be downloaded @ https://builds.jabref.org/ and https://builds.jabref.org/master/

Cheers!!
