I was playing with beta VPN Beta Windscribe and lost my Antix install earlier today... Hence new install...

1. No sound volume icon on panel
2. Crashes within 2/4 hours with newer kernels (I tried 4.19.18)
3. Having difficulty remembering how I managed to change sound card from HDMI to Generic - and make it stay changed.

Thought I had forum post and notes for this but can not locate to fix these problems.

I have been running 4.9.146-antix.1-amd64-smp x86_64 bits for a long time because of crashing newer kernels

Slowly getting Antix 17.3.1 set up again...

1 Solved, after several reboots there is an volume Icon on Panel.
3. Managed to get sound card to changed, and it has stayed on new setting. Maybe the Sound Volume icon only appears in the panel when sound card is working?

Maybe it's time to seriously consider updating your bios.
If you do so, you will most likely be able to use any kernel, even the newest 4.20 without crashes.

Please follow this thread some sides, looking for Paul and entropyfoe, a bios-update and afterwards the right settings in bios, solves the crashing problem.

For a new system like Ryzen you are probably better off with MX 18. The MX team did update many packages (hardware support) that you don't find in antiX 17.

I prefer the antiX/MX 17 packages, but if I had a Ryzen system I would go with MX 18.

Had not thought about a bio or uefi update, and my MSI hardware is very old in Ryzen age, and apparently would not run a Ryzen second gen processor...

I have not had a single crash since the BIOS update. I took out the boot parameter. Many cases of over 10-15 days up time.

Over two days uptime, mostly idling (which causes the crash) still solid.
I will leave the rcu_nocbs for now, but when the RC comes, I will omit the grub line.

So the key is a newer BIOS, for me 4024, that has a new option in the advanced tab, Power Supply Idle Control, and this is set from the Auto to "Typical Current Idle".
I used to need that rcu ncbs=0-11 boot parameter.

But the real fix is the BIOS update, and then you have to change one setting the "Typical Current Idle".
I think what was happening, at idle, the power consumption was being driven too low to keep the CPU running. This fixes that issue.

OK, have updated Bios (B350M GAMING PRO (MS-7A39) V2.L BIOS Release - 2019/1/28)

Now can not boot, am typing from Live Media. Went to boot repair, but there is no UEFI seems like only Legacy repair.
Is there something else I can do, or does this again require a new install?

Do not know how to change: the setting the "Typical Current Idle". if MSI Motherboard has that setting what do I change it to?

I have crashed again with 4.19.18 - using 4.20.0 now to see if that changes the downtime...

Yes, can boot properly now...

I tried to update to kernel 4.20.0 and it seems to install with many more messages, but as you can see I am still running Kernel: 4.19.18-antix.1-amd64-smp x86_64 bits:

Seems 4.20.0 will not install...
Am still searching web to find how to change "Typical Current Idle" on my motherboard.
