Is it possible to compile MX to run on ARM?

#1 Post by Sparky »

I have a couple of Raspberry Pi 3's and was just wondering If it's possible to run MX Linux on them? There is a Debian version.
MX Linux Asus F552, 12GB RAM, 500GB WD SSD MX19.2
Dell Inspiron 7559 16GB RAM 1X 256GB SSD & 1TB SSD MX KDE 21.1 & Windows 11
Mini Tower PC 2X 256GB SSD MX KDE21.1

Remember when you asked "possible to just SILENTLY bypass the trash when I press shift+delete"
and I replied (more or less) "yes, and here's howto in case you're sufficiently motivated to do so"
and you ultimately replied (more or less) "nvrmind"?

This time, let's skip to the end ~~ as a practical matter, the answer must be no.
No, it is not possible for you, from your armchair, to do so.

ps: in advance, I'll pledge US$50 toward supporting the goal of achieving an RPi -ported MX Linux

No, I never said never mind, nor hinted at it. I said I was scared of screwing up something but If it's as simple as following the instructions, I'd do it.

Just understand (and don't take it personally) that in the context of "it's linux, it's opensource" the answer to most questions is a qualified affirmative.

Yes, OF COURSE it is possible...
...nvrmind.

^-------- This sort of dialogue quickly becomes a tiresome dance.

cautiously asking is good, but expect that the appropriate answer for such questions may be
"(if ya want) try it, then let us know if it works"

There are no builds of MX on the "armhf" architecture, which is what the Pi has.

It is possible to build armhf packages of most MX applications using the OBS, but we need people to help out with actual doing, plus actually building an armhf ISO is whole 'nother kettle of fish.

Here's an example of a few apps on the OBS. Armv71 there = armhf.

I'm curious, can pbuilder create armhf packages?

It would on MX 15/16, but won't successfully do that on a Stretch base. Someone on the BL forums had the same experience. On MX 15, I was able to compile a few apps such as yad as armhf, and the debs are in the repo, I think.
I used this guide: https://jodal.no/2015/03/08/building-ar ... -pbuilder/

Qemu is supposed to be able to run an armhf Debian ISO--maybe I should try that with Polo and the Debian Live ISO.
