(SOLVED) MX-18 fresh installation - CPU 100% ????

#1 Post by fanisatt »

Something bad is happening here....
CPU "dances" very easily up to 100 % !!!!
Is this a simple and harmless Intel microcode issue ? I hope so....but , if is not so harmless , please give me any help.
Best regards !
My PC : MotherBoard Gigabyte GA-X38-DS5, CPU Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 (3GHz), RAM 8GB , Graphics Nvidia Geforce 710
OS MX 18 (fresh install)

Can you give us the result of "Quick System Info" from the menu here, inside code tags? </>

I suggest you run htop in terminal and see what processes/programs are using up the cpu.

@ bffarmer
I have already done it.
Generally , the CPU load rises very sharply. I don't remember this behavior in MX 17.

... And at CPU 100%

I've heard of a lot of folks with Core 2 Duo processors having some odd issues. Dropping back to the debian 4.9 kernel worked for them.

lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 - MX-23
FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

Yes, it looks like the CPU speed scaling isn't working (see last line):

Code: Select all

CPU: Topology: Dual Core model: Intel Core2 Duo E8400 bits: 64 type: MCP arch: Penryn
           rev: 6 L2 cache: 6144 KiB
           flags: lm nx pae sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 ssse3 vmx bogomips: 11997
           Speed: 2839 MHz min/max: N/A Core speeds (MHz): 1: 2839 2: 2794
So it's locked at 100% cpu speed, but I don't think 100% usage, which could be confirmed with

Code: Select all

cpufreq-info
If the 4.9 kernel fixes the problem, we'd appreciate some testing of our newer 4.19 kernels to see if that fixes the issue. We also have 4.20 kernels, but our Nvidia driver currently doesn't build with it...though I see the stretch-backports 390.87 Nvidia driver has been patched to do so. I'll port that over right now.

Thank you for your replies !
I decided to change the kernel and I have already installed the DEBIAN one.
The MX package installer informed me , that the kernel installed successfully.
I did not try to remove the 4.19 yet (i think I have to remove this linux image with synaptic later) because I don't know how to boot using the installed Debian kernel (linux image?).
Trying to boot with this older kernel I saw 2 options at the (advanced) MX bootloader screen , one with systemd and an other one without !!!
Both of them can't boot.
Any help please ?

What error message are you seeing ?

Both should be able to boot, MX defaults to the non-systemd (aka sysV) entry.

Once booted under the debian kernel you can uninstall 4.19 and the grub config file will be re-generated so that the 4.8 default entry appears at the top (provided you have no other, more recent kernel installed)
