ThinkPad X120e users should use antiX over MX

#1 Post by lonesomepoint »

While I wait for my next used full-sized Thinkpad to arrive, I had to dig out my Thinkpad X120e, the only functioning computer I have for the moment. It's not a netbook but intermediate in size between that and a full-sized laptop. But the X120e is nevertheless only soemwhat better than a netbook in speed and power. My MX-18 ran so slowly on it that I eventually told myself I should install antiX on it--would probably run faster. I find that yes, switching to antiX did indeed solve that problem. Anyone stuck with a ThinkPad X120e who normally uses MX would be well-advised to run antiX instead. The computer's just too slow for MX.

What are the specs of the X120e? Is that an atom? single core? how much ram?

I have found that MX-17 runs fairly decent on P4 2+ Ghz and 1Gb of ram. But usually needs a dual-core and 2 Gb Ram before it feels almost speedy. I put antiX on most everything before dual core.
MX21-64 XFCE & W11 on Lenovo 330S LT. MX21-KDE & MX21-XFCE on Live USB.
MX18-64 & W7, Fedora on HP Core2 DT
MX21-32 XFCE w/ MX-Fluxbox on P4HT DT w/ antiX21, SUSE Tumbleweed, Q4OS, WXP
antiX21 on Compaq PIII 1 Ghz DT, w/ Debian, MX18FB, W2K

I totally agree with your recommandations. My Dell laptop (P4 2,4Ghz + 1Go of ram) felt good with MX 16 but honestly it was even better with antiX. The other one a Toshiba with dual core T9300 and 3 Go lives happily with MX 17.

Well, there's always room for exceptions. I had a P-III/450 laptop running antiX that I used in my office as a music/internet radio player using Streamtuner2. It worked good. But then I picked up an old Athlon XP 3000+ laptop at a garage sale for $5.

I've never had an Athlon based computer before but I think it's basically in the P-4 single core class, and this one runs at up to 1600Mhz and has 1.25 Gb RAM. It had XP SP3 on it. I decided to install MX on it and I'm pretty pleased with it's performance. But I am only using it to be my new internet radio player, replacing the old P-III/450. I also have it setup with a dual monitor with an old VGA LCD that I picked up for $2. MX runs good on it.
