Linux-image-4.19.0-1-686-unsigned_4.19.5-2~mx17+1_i386 works out-of-the-box.
Thank you all for your advice.

I had to go back for a working Liquorix-kernel (from Opensuse OBS-repository) to

linux-image-4.14.0-20.3-liquorix-686_4.14-29~obs_i386

@cinclus, have you booted the problematic kernels on an installed system? If so, I'd like to see the output of "lsmod". It is possible they are compiling a vital component of the kernel as a module and we aren't including it in the live initrd. This would be easy to fix if we could track down which module(s) we need to add.

This would explain why our kernels work live while the liquorix ones fail. It could be that the microcode message is a red herring.

No. But for testing I have setup one now.

?
Booting into kernel: linux-image-4.19.0-12.2-liquorix-686_4.19-6~obs_i386, systemd or non-systemd,
I get nothing but a blinking cursor.

If the kernel does not boot on an installed system then the problem is likely something with the kernel rather than something with the live system. If it boots on the installed system but not the live system then I can (at least try to) help you fix that. If it doesn't boot on either then someone else will have to help.

I found one Liquorix kernel-version which boots live but not on an installed system: 4.14.0-20.3-liquorix-686.

Besides the 4.14 Liquorix kernel all others I tested (Liquorix 4.13, 4.17, 4.19) didn't work as well on the installed system.

To narrow further down the problem:

For testing I have live-remastered an otherwise pristine MX18-live-usb with kernel
linux-image-4.17.0-19.2-liquorix-686-pae_4.17-15~obs_i386.
It yields the same microcode error, please see my first post.

But - the 64-Bit MX-Studio live system (unofficial respin)
https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php?f=100&t=46170
which uses another - but 64-Bit - Liquorix 4.17-kernel boots flawlessly!

could be as well helpfull for analysing the problems with the 32-Bit Liquorix-kernels.

Re: missing microcode after Liquorix kernel update

#19 Post by BitJam »

Thanks for the info cinclus! The lsmod output on an installed system is only useful (to me) if that same kernel does not boot live because it will give me clues for what other modules we may need to add to the live initrd to make that particular kernel work. The lsmod output for one kernel does not help me with a different kernel.

That's because in each kernel config you get to choose what gets compiled as a module, what gets compiled built into the kernel, and what is not compiled at all. In years past there would sometimes be a problem with a kernel building something as a module that we had only seen built in yet that module is vital for the live boot. The list of possible modules we need for the live system is in the copy-initrd-modules script in my build-iso repo. When we discover a new module is needed then we add it to that list and the module will get added to the initrd when we create a distribution iso and when live-kernel-updater changes the kernel on a live system.

ATM I have no idea what is going on with the kernels that don't boot on installed systems. If a kernel boots on our installed system but not live then I will try to make it boot live too.

Trying to rebuild a Liquorix kernel Re: missing microcode after Liquorix kernel update

#20 Post by cinclus »

I found no adequate source for handling the Liquorix sources: linux-liquorix_4.18.orig.tar.xz, linux-liquorix_4.18-28~obs.debian.tar.xz
I made a naive attempt using the Debian kernel handbook to rebuild a Liquorix 4.18.20 kernel source to no avail. After installing the source and the package containing the patches I installed several missing packages.
I have no idea of the correct Debian method for including the diverse kernel-patches. So what was doing is poking about in a fog.
I came to this:

Code: Select all

make -f debian/rules.gen binary-arch_i386_none_liquorix-686-pae_real
