Installation complete, won't boot, need grub advice

#1

Post by ionmich » Tue Dec 25, 2018 5:14 pm

When the drive MX-18 is installed to is set as default boot drive in the BIOS, MX-18 will not boot. I get a black screen with a flashing cursor. Super Grub Live does not find it. When I boot to another distro and use its software manager to update its boot menu, it recognizes and can start MX-18. How do go about modifying grub from inside MX-18?

Thanks in advance.

I found the boot repair application and this time I set grub to boot from the MBR. Problem solved.

If the other distro controls the boot,
boot into that distro and execute,

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
then reboot and you should see MX listed in the grub boot menu.

And, as you found, the MX Boot Repair puts MX in control of the boot process;
it runs update-grub so the other distro is available in the grub menu.
