I'm confused with latest upgrade??

#1 Post by Bierhundt »

Usually I just point and click on the little green box and give the p/w for admin and it automagically upgrades my MX-17. This time, I got a couple of dialog boxes - both were just informational about something called Grub-pc --- no 'yes' or 'no' boxes, only 'OK'. so I clicked both of the OK boxes and then a box came up that said I had selected NOT to install Grub. That gave me the option to click 'yes' meaning I didn't want Grub installed, or 'no' meaning (to me) that I wanted my same Grub left alone.
Did I miss something?? I've closed out of that upgrade for now until I can get some guidance as to how I shoud proceed. I don't want to mess with my present/current Grub install or configuration, i just want it left alone --- BUT, I'd also like it to be upgraded if it's necessary to keep up with the latest updates and security concerns.
TIA, Bierhundt

There is forum post about this and what to do. Check other forum titles. If I remember correctly (hmm, not sure any more) it does not affect you, but just to be sure & on a safe side, see if you can find and read that forum first. It was written about this few days ago.

Hi Buck - That vid was no help .... I clicked on that same choice that DO did, and that's when I got the extra "OK's" that I wrote about (he didn't get those dialog boxes that I did) ... I don't do virtuals, so I didn't get the rest of the video. This is a few days later than my first post, and my wife just ran up against the same boxes with the same 'you chose not to install Grub' message. I'll try the other video in the next comment - Thanx

Again, no help ... same video!
I'll go thru it again and try to copy those dialog boxes so I can get a better idea of what I'm doing wrong!
Thanx

just make sure to hit the "space bar" to actually make a selection. just a red box isn't enough, as the red box is just the cursor. you will have made a selection when a asterisk is present.

Thanks Dolphin Oracle - I was referring to the red line that asked if you want to keep the local Grub - didn't get any red boxes.
I just checked, and now I have no updates/upgrades at all, whereas my wife's MX shows 220!

it asks to keep the local /etc/default/grub config. which you should, and I believe that's the default.

- with Tab-key you jump to the next field so the red cursur will be in the next field.
- with Spacebar you toggle selection fields on /off
- in text fields like the default-line of grub you enter text (if you would know what to put in there) leave as it is
and jump with Tab-key to next field.
- On OK, Next or Back you can use Spacebar to proceed (on those Enter would also do I think)
