Is it possible to add libreoffice-systray to LO 6.1.3 available in Debian backports Repo?

#1 Post by PPC »

I'm a long time LibreOffice user and I've always used the quickstart/systray option that has been deprecated.
I got a bit of hope the LO dev's would bring back that "feature" because I use it so Writer and Calc open open in 1 second and not about 10 seconds on my very old pc's...
I got a ray of hope here: https://www.techspot.com/downloads/5131 ... suite.html that mentions that "Added Quickstarter for Unix builds (enabled only in distro builds)"
This Unix mention, I believe refers to Linux... Is there a way to get that backported or should I just stay with the current LO version that MX 17.1 default Repos offer? I can't find quickstart/systray on the default debs LO offers... Nor it's Appimages, it seems to be really, really deprecated, if not for this mention of "distros builds".
I believe that this small but usufull feature would be used by people that use MX in a office environment on older hardware...

As always, thanks for this great distro, Mx team!

I don't see that option any more in LibO-6.1.3 installed from MX-PI.

I'll check around to see.

NOTE: I have a question in here: https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question ... start-app/
See if you can read it without having to login. You might see the answer before i do. Regards.

NOTE2: Might try the download from here where they say it is maybe activated?

I found this in the changelog:
https://sources.debian.org/src/libreoff ... elog/#L232

* debian/rules, debian/control.systray.in: the systray "Quickstarter" is
finally gone upstream.

From the below, create a script with

Code: Select all

libreoffice --writer %U
and set it to auto-start.
If you have more than 1 version installed, you might need to use libreoffice6 or libreoffice61

From Ask_LibO I got this, hope this helps a bit.
It seems to have been removed for good.:

The quickstart was deprecated on 5.4, and finally it has been removed on 6.1.

Because you are in Linux, most of the quickstarter functions can be replicated with desktop files. Just point them to

libreoffice --writer %U

to open Writer (change to --draw to get Draw, etc)

libreoffice .uno:NewDoc

to open the templates tool

or

libreoffice .uno:Open

to get the tool to open an existing file.

Thanks for all your answers.
Replying in chronological order:

@Richard
- I was able to read https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question ... start-app/, it confirmed the official LO post I read somewhere about it being finally completely deprecated in LO 6.1... I downloaded the debs files they offer at that page but they did not have the libreoffice-systray.deb file... :-(

@kmathern - do you think that "the systray "Quickstarter" is finally gone upstream." means that it is "reinstated" in 1:6.1.0~beta1-1? But not in later versions? I read the description of the later LO versions on that webpage and there's no mention of systray... I know, I know, it's a LO problem not, MX's...

@Richard- thanks for the suggestions. I start writer via terminal with "libreoffice --writer" sometimes, mainly while trying out LO appimages... "libreoffice --writer %U" tries to open the file "%U" and returns an error stating there is no "/home/.../%U"...
I guess Linux caches some information about LO because the second time around starting writer that way is faster, takes about half the time, but it's not as fast as using the systray.
Just to clarify: I almost never start any office applications via systray... I have a writer icon on my taskbar that usually I click, or open a text document from the file manager... The systray just sits there, taking up some 20-30 meg of ram and speeding up the opening of my LO applications.
The "and set it to auto-start." suggestion you made I think refers to making writer launch every time I log on and just, for example, minimize it (or start it minimized) and let it stay there running in the background... I sometimes do that, when I have to open lots of documents sequentially, but... My work PC has 3 Gig of RAM (not that bad) and my netbook and home PC have only 1 gig of ram each (not so good- I use antiX on both and still I often deal with lack of RAM on those devices), so, for me it's not that practical to spend RAM this way... I usually turn off the systray when I need more RAM (it's set to auto enable the next time I execute writer...)

Once again, thanks for your suggestions!

P.

Edit1: I just read this- https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question ... start-app/ - "To add for the question, it's gone for good, also removed from the source code and not available anymore during build time." So I guess the question, at least for now is solved- no more systray for LO :-(
At the same time I found this for Ubuntu: "transitional package for removed LibreOffice "Quickstarter" in https://www.ubuntuupdates.org/package/l ... ce-systray. I downloaded the deb file and tried to analyze it. It's a almost empty file....

Edit2: Side note: is there any other way I can use to speed up LibreOffice? I stumbled about into prelink, but all the info I read on-line about it is years old. Synaptic offers that package, but I found nothing about it in the manual and forum... Would it be a good idea to start a thread asking for help with that or is prelink no longer useful on newer distros like MX?
