Steamed up over Stage 9

Before there was Star Trek: Bridge Crew, Ubisoft’s game about piloting the original Enterprise, there was Star Trek Stage-9, a fan project recreating the Enterprise-D from The Next Generation in Unreal Engine. This week the project is no more, following a cease and desist demand by CBS.

One of the leads on the project, who goes by Scragnog, posted a video on YouTube explaining why it would no longer be getting future updates and development was coming to an end. “On Wednesday, September 12, 2018, we received a letter from the CBS legal department,” he said. “This letter was a cease and desist order. The uncertain future we always had at the back of our minds had caught up to us.”
Here is a video of Scragnog explaining the situation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0zycZdKymg.

:soapbox:

I had never heard of Stage 9 until I read about it being yanked. When I went onto YouTube and had a look at it I was staggered at what has been accomplished by Star Trek fans who created it not for profit, but for the love of the TV program.

Here is a video of a walk around of the USS Enterprise https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ht_yNFm1nuE. The attention to detail is stunning, and there are a few things lying around which only make sense if you've watched the series. If you get bored walking around the ship you can encounter the Borg or take a shuttle and fly around DS9 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knAGFp9ugbc.

The yanking of this work is a travesty for the people who put thousands of hours of effort over 2 years into creating it, and it has deprived those of us who want to while away time in the Star Trek universe the chance of doing so.

I can't see any sense in CBS' actions. This stunning piece of fan art had the potential to generate new viewers for, and additional revenue from Star Trek TNG, but CBS has deemed enforcing IP is more important even though everyone loses.

This is insanity.

I never heard of Stage 9. I heard of and watched Deep Space 9. The best Star Trek is the original series.
I am command line illiterate. I copy & paste to the terminal. Liars, Wiseguys, Trolls, and those without manners will be added to my ignore list.

I too hadn't heard of it until last week, if I had I'd have been begging for it to be made available via the PM.

Stage 9 essentially created an explorable Enterprise 1701D from ST:TNG.

The videos I link to show how good the simulation was.
