Sorry again, but I can't find any dvd's (haven't used them for so long) and haven't done any burning disks on Linux, and I'm not good with doing any technical stuff ... only manage basic installs or updates etc. Thank you very much for offering this advice, which I really appreciate, but it's getting beyond me. Sorry, health issues are part of it, but I'm grateful for the attempt to help.Eadwine Rose wrote:Yup, that works ok indeed.
Can you try burning to a dvd? To rule out the USB stick issue.
You can then check the burned DVD using
sr0 is the location of my dvd drive, and replace size with the actual size of the iso (right click, properties, and then next to Size the long number that is between ( ) without the commas).Code: Select all
dd if=/dev/sr0 | head --bytes=size | md5sum

Re: live usb invalid sector size 65535
Just found something in my notes to check the USB's md5sum
Insert the drive, browse to the USB drive antiX folder, (for me that is /media/eadwine/MX-Live-usb/antiX/ )
and in there enter
Let it do its thing.
If all is ok it should look like this:
Insert the drive, browse to the USB drive antiX folder, (for me that is /media/eadwine/MX-Live-usb/antiX/ )
and in there enter
Code: Select all
cat *.md5 | md5sum -c
If all is ok it should look like this:
Code: Select all
$ cat *.md5 | md5sum -c
initrd.gz: OK
linuxfs: OK
vmlinuz: OK

Also.. no worries about the health issue, girl with issues here as well It's why I will always be the eternal noob that depends on her notes, but boy are they useful right now *grin*

Re: live usb invalid sector size 65535
Thanks again. :-) Sorry, I don't know how to type the stick between md5 and md5. UK keyboard. The only terminal bit I can use regarding access to a folder is the right click 'open in terminal', but unfortunately stickless, lol, so unable to do. No worries.Eadwine Rose wrote:Just found something in my notes to check the USB's md5sum

And, yes, just seen your message while I'm typing ... yes, you're right. I have one document with simple notes in, that literally saves the day. Anything new goes straight in there, and triple backed up.
Just searching about, I'm seeing reference to usb key not booting if in a usb3 port, with some machines. Will try. :-) Also seeing that a snapshot iso can have an issue with some machines ... I'm thinking the torrent or Sourceforge downloads would be finals, so probably not an issue.

The stick? Oh the | thing..
you can select it, and copy it from the line I gave you (right click - copy) and then you can right click - paste in the terminal, and then you're all set :)
And yep, same here. My notes now span 20 pages font size 12 *snort*

Lol haha! You're doing really well there. :-) I'm a bit minimalist with mine, but thank goodness for it. I'll get copying the 'stick', lol.Eadwine Rose wrote:The stick? Oh the | thing..

Re: live usb invalid sector size 65535
Hrm... I was kinda hoping it would say something like FAILED
I'm afraid this is the end of what I have in my notes about this. Hopefully someone else more in the know on this can come in and pick this up, when they wake up At least we know the USB iso is ok, and the downloaded iso is also ok.
I wonder what is up with the thing..
Glad to have helped out though! :)

Re: live usb invalid sector size 65535
Lol, yes; would have been a nice easy solution if just a different iso download had fixed things. Have much appreciated your help about this, and it will be interesting to discover what it is later. Many thanks again. :-)Eadwine Rose wrote:Hrm... I was kinda hoping it would say something like FAILED

Re: live usb invalid sector size 65535
Even you mentioned "bios" in your post above I do wonder you are booting in UEFI mode or BIOS mode?teddylegs wrote: ... 'error:invalid sector size 65535' ... Running it from Linux system, so bios is already altered...
Checking via checksum the MX related files is not enough as GRUB related
files might have been corrupt - so better check the whole ISO.
Here how I would try to handle this issue to sort out.
Surely first you would need to verify the ISO via checksum and (better!) signature-checking (see the MX manual) as pointed out already by Adrian and Eadwine Rose.
Next make sure the USB-stick is healthy and does not have any bad sectors / bad blocks.
To verify your usbstick does not have any bad sectors/blocks
Plugin the USB-stick and open in file manager.
Now watch for the device name by running this in the terminal.
Code: Select all
lsblk
Above you see my USB-stick has the device name /dev/sdg$ lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda 8:0 0 465,8G 0 disk
├─sda1 8:1 0 60G 0 part
...
└─sda6 8:6 0 50G 0 part /
sdg 8:96 1 58,4G 0 disk
├─sdg1 8:97 1 58,4G 0 part /media/fehlix/Live-usb
└─sdg2 8:98 1 50M 0 part
Now do unmount from within Thunar the USB-stick.
You can now ckeck the USB-stick for bad blocks like this
Code: Select all
# sudo badblocks -t random -v -w -s /dev/sdX
Warning! The test will destructively overwrite all data
on the stick. Be careful to use the correct device name of your USB-stick.
Otherwise ... your are done!
If any errors show up, you might throw the USB stick into the bin!
If no errors show up and you have done checksum and signature checks
of the ISO do "burn" the ISO again with help of the "MX Live creator" and perhaps this time do use
the option "Copy Image to USB (dd)"
If the dd-imaged USB stick will boot properly you might consider recreating again the USB stick using
the standard option, i.e. tick off "Copy Image to USB (dd)" within "MX Live creator".
Happy booting. Good Luck!

Re: live usb invalid sector size 65535
Thank you very much, fehliz :-)
I'm booting in UEFI. Switched bios last May to enable installing LInux, and have used UEFI for live tries and for installs.
I plugged in the USB and typed 'lsblk' ...
I've unplugged the 4 externals, incase I do a goof, lol ... thanks for clear instructions, but if I may check exactly what would be the right line to type to check the usb. Great to learn, and, yes, if the little divil is what's causing the problem, I'll take great joy in chucking it far out of the window, lol. :-)
I've been having the USB formatted to Fat32 before adding the iso, if that has relevance.
