I was running fine on the Wine-staging that MX Package Installer gave me, but the older version prevented me from reviewing how a program works on it, at WineHQ. So I added the WineHQ repository, uninstalled the existing Wine-staging, and installed the latest one they offered.
Lo and behold, it was only ver. 2.21, still not new enough to qualify me to add a review. So I inquired, and found that Staging is in a dormant state currently, with no definite prognosis.
So I went back, uninstalled Staging, and installed Stable, which is at 3.0. It works fine, except that I had to tweak some program shortcuts.
I don't know if 3.0 performs better than 2.1, but they say it includes a lot of changes.
Just a heads-up.

Thanks for heads-up Paul. Have not been working with WINE recently, having retired from supporting a craft group based on a Microsoft application. Used the Codeweavers commercial version for a while. Will look again at WINE. Latest release is 3.2

Does that Wine 3.0 add new programs to the menu like our version of wine-staging? We could backport the stable 3.0 from Buster to our own repos, but we might have to do a bit of tweaking if not.

I don't see anything in the Menu, except when I type "wine" it produces the command "run wine".
To get my existing wine program to work, I had to change the string 'wine-staging' to 'wine-stable' in its shortcut. Other windows progs that fire through file extension association worked as normal through "mono" without any doctoring.

I'm seeing a noticeable difference with Stable 3.0. I'm in a Bible program (theWord), and the fonts are remarkably well aliased - which was always a weakness of Wine. Windows has nothing on these fonts. And the scrollbars are coming through extra-wide, as I have tweaked them to be in my gtk-2 theme. For my purposes, this is a big improvement.
