#1 Post by Fornhamfred »

I am experiencing problems during loading that some my usb 1.1 and usb2 root hubs are reporting errors. This is the output from dmesg | grep usb

I have found that a temporary fix is to remove the power cable and usb cables and leave the machine for about 30 mins. The errors do not then occur but do reoccur after a short period.
Can anyone please suggest a permanent solution?

Please run inxi -F and post...also post lsusb since all these problems are usb related...

The errors at the end of your dmesg listing seem to indicate the inability to enumerate and address the devices...

This is after it has previously registered and communicated with the devices earlier.

My best guess is that trying another kernel might solve the problem. Have a look at the kernels available through the MX Package Installer (MX Tools->Package Installer->Kernels). Without knowing more about your hardware, I'd start with the 4.9s...there are several.

Thanks for your response.
The machine has been disconnected for several hours and is working OK at the moment, however it will not last.

When a computer that was formerly working correctly starts getting this kind of error, I suspect that the power supply is starting to fail, or there is overheating. Either one can have that effect of devices being recognized and working, then failing after a short time.

Check to make sure your fan(s) are running, and that the case is not choked with dust. A lot can build up in 3-4 years.

Shot in the dark...That particular motherboard, ASUSTeK model: M5A78L-M/USB3, offers a BIOS config for USB. You might try putting it into Legacy USB Support mode...even if it is set to Auto now...you can force it by selecting Enable.

From the ASUSTeK model: M5A78L-M/USB3 user manual:
Legacy USB Support [Auto]Allows you to enable or disable support for Legacy USB storage devices, including USB flashdrives and USB hard drives. Setting to Auto allows the system to detect the presence of USBdevices at startup. If detected, the USB controller legacy mode is enabled. If no USB deviceis detected, the legacy USB support is disabled. Configuration options: [Disabled] [Enabled][Auto]

I have changed the power supply and also checked that all fans are working and removed the small amount of dust in the machine but unfortunately this has not cured the problem.
The machine is slow to get to grub so I assume that the problem is hardware related but I am very surprised that changing the power supply did not cure the problem.

Do you have usb ports/card reader on a front panel, connected to headers on the MB? I had to replace mine recently because those ports & card reader kept disconnecting (the permanent ports on the back kept working fine). If one of those went faulty enough I suppose it could cause problems on the other USB ports.

Thanks for the suggestion, I do have the usb ports/card reader on the front panel. Have disconnected it and will report back if that sorts the problem.

Well great, the machine works perfectly again after disconnecting the card reader, now just have to decide whether to replace it. Thanks once again for the great advice.
