MX-17 package update proposal: "Ring - A GNU package" (a Free Software alternative to Skype)

Dear repo men,

for the reasons mentioned here: viewtopic.php?p=424104#p424104 and here: viewtopic.php?p=418089#p418089, I'd like to propose having the latest "Ring - A GNU package" (https://ring.cx/en/about/practical) (SIP-capable audio/video conferencing software) available for testing in the MX Test Repo, as a promising and probably very comfortable Free Software alternative to Skype.

A link to the source code and instructions for package building are here: https://tuleap.ring.cx/plugins/mediawik ... structions.

"Debianization examples" can be downloaded here: https://ring.cx/en/download/gnu-linux.

There's some 2016 version in Debian's repos which seems to be far outdated.

Greetings, and thanks in advance for looking into this, Joe

Can we use this to contact people on Windows Skype?

Cause that is a must-have for a Skypeforlinux replacement for me.

I guess you could easily run it in SIP mode in these cases and employ a SIP-to-Skype gateway for that.

Second option: You could tell people that you don't want to spoil your clean MX-17 system by installing Skype, and tell them to call you by phone in case they don't want to invest three minutes in installing Ring. I guess that quite some people will prefer installing a free piece of software towards having to pay for phone calls. Just as they did when they installed Skype .

I know that most average users are fixed on the proprietary software they are used to, so the effort of explaining to them what the advantages of Free Software are always takes some time. To my experience, the only easy case is when you can tell them that the use of Skype is forbidden in your company.

Interesting article on Ring: https://www.linux.com/learn/why-and-how ... kype-linux.

They could... if it wasn't for the fact that I am almost deaf and prefer text stuff like this.

And getting ALL those people to install different software that they have been using for years just for me? :lol2:

Rabid FREE SOFTWARE fans will never be satisfied with MX's "JUST WORKS" philosophy. Which gives me perverse pleasure. FOSS devotion is OCD unmedicated. There's more important things to worry about.

That's a question of personal philosophy. My view:

* Working with and helping to enhance Free/Libre Open Source Software:

- Transparency,
- progress for everyone,
- voluntary adding to a common good.

* Using proprietary applications consumer-style:

- No transparency,
- no progress for everyone,
- no voluntary adding to a common good.

But as I said, it's a question of personal philosophy (and often a question of comfort also).

Said to people actually producing & distributing FOSS software to many users who wouldn't use it if it were made less convenient. Those users are important too and an expanded user base ends up, over time, expanding the FOSS ecosystem.
Most Gnu/Linux users don't care that much about the philosophy - they care that it helps them get stuff done. If they can't get their stuff done conveniently they'll go back to proprietary.

Yeah, exactly. That's why I'm super-happy to see that during the past year some serious new candidates have emerged.

I've been thoroughly testing Free/Libre VoIP applications for more than ten years now, and I must say that in the past – apart from the abandoned QuteCom - unfortunately more or less everything turned out to be crap when compared to Skype. That seems to have changed now.

As for a direct connection of FLOSS VoIP software to the Skype protocol, however, despite of the good trend towards more user comfort that can be seen, I see next to no chance unless Skype should donate their protocol to the public domain (which might never happen).
