Re: 4.14.9 Kernel crashes
Stevo, Good tip, I think that makes sense, the Ryzen stuff is not a problem for Meltdown, but spectre is still potential, or at least one variant.
I am not worried about these, for now these exploits are not yet reported the wild, and exploitation is theoretical and difficult.
4.10 antix kernel is totally stable, 45 days, I will stick with that. I still await 4.15, where all the patches are baked in, and supposedly lots of Ryzen code, like for temp monitoring.

Sorry, that's incorrect. They are two different kernels altogether. It's the last one down on the list. MX 4.14kernel. Which really is 4.14.0-12.1-liquorix-amd64 x86_64
Re: 4.14.9 Kernel crashes
I have been running 14.4.12 all day long. It has been stable thus far. I have not run it non-stop for days, but it looks good and has not crashed yet.
14.4.9 would shut down the system, and 4.13.4 that would freeze the system...
Thank you everyone, guess I like many will wait for newer hardware to be released and do antiX 17 updates as they appear.

Re: 4.14.9 Kernel crashes
Hey, you're using the gnu libre version of the 4.14.12 antiX kernel. Is that intentional?
The 'normal' kernel is 4.14.12-antix.1-amd64-smp

Re: 4.14.9 Kernel crashes
Yesterday I installed a few kernels in antix17.
All booted fine except the 4.14 ( I understand the 4.14 is meltdown/spectre patched) which went to a black terminal, I logged in and tried startx, but there was no xserver to log into, was the kind of errors messages I got.
So, how do I get the nvidia driver on the 4.14, on the 4.10, 4.9.75 the nvidia comes in automagically.
Then how to do that in MX? I want to try athe antix kernel versions on the Ryzen to see if they are for some reason more stable.

I dont kow how this is related. On my intel-box the newest antix-4.14.12-kernel runs fine together with the newest nvidia 384.111-driver.
Which nvidia-driver do you use ?

Re: 4.14.9 Kernel crashes
The 4.14-12 MX kernel has a bug inherited from Debian, where its headers don't pull in libelf-dev. We worked around that temporarily by having mx-system pull it in, but that obviously won't be installed in antiX. Some dkms drivers don't rebuild if libelf-dev isn't installed, though I'm not sure if Nvidia is one of them.
I am uploading a rebuild of that kernel which I hope corrects that missing dependency, as well as includes the patch to allow the new amd64-microcode to apply to Ryzen processors.

Re: 4.14.9 Kernel crashes
This is strange, bc on my sytem libelf-dev isn't installed, nevertheless the nvidia-driver built very well against the kernel.
Code: Select all
