Nice. The one we are using certainly could use some work, and this is a good idea. Fits well with current icon set.
Production: 5.10, MX-23 Xfce, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 16 GB, SSD 120 GB, Data 1TB
Personal: Lenovo X1 Carbon with MX-23 Fluxbox and Windows 10

Anybody got any ideas for the default look icon?
Maybe leave as is and just make it look more modern?

I like your icon, but wonder if the official logo could be worked into it, so that the 2 tools form the X that is behind the 2 mountains/pyramids (which might have to be in a different colour to stand out from the tools).

[added] Sorry, was referring to the MX Tools icon.

The Settings Manager Panel icon could be modified, adopting and adapting the default look graphic elements to the Panel icon style?

Edit....could each MX application icon even be themed as such with a logo, border or watermark or something like that, a good point above.

In here, where you can see look and panel icons. Admittedly you could even two tone the background or something to reflect light/dark themes, but just a thought on working from familiar conventions. :happy:
