MEPIS 12/MX 14 Community Repo: The Wireshark Thread

#1 Post by Stevo » Wed Aug 03, 2016 4:45 pm

The new Wireshark 2.0.5 release is now available in the test repository. Wireshark is a network "sniffer" - a tool that captures and analyzes packets off the wire. Wireshark can decode too many protocols to list here.

"Wireshark" itself is just a metapackage that depends on either wireshark-qt or wireshark-gtk, so you just need one of those installed, though you can also have both.

Here's a lighthearted list of reasons to use it, though one serious reason to use it is to see exactly what closed-source programs are doing on the Net, such as phoning home with your data.
