External Hard Drive

Post by peregrine » Sat Sep 06, 2014 11:10 am

My daughter-in-law's windows 7 barely runs she says. I need to get a backup of her files off of it. I have a LaCie 500GB external hard drive I can use, it is ext3. Will that work or do I need to reformat it?

Unless you're making a clone it will be fine. Data and files are separate entities to the file system/format. You will need to use Linux (using one with ntfs-3g) to move the data to the External HDD and also back to the Windows system when you've put them in an Ext file system.
Yes, even I am dishonest. Not in many ways, but in some. Forty-one, I think it is.

1) Has it been scanned for Viruses, Trojan Horses, and other Malware? Her antivirus should be doing this.

2) Does she have more than one antivirus program on her machine? If she does, that is the problem. They are trying to compete between each other. She should have only one (1). At a MINUMUM, she should have Microsoft Safety Scanner. http://www.microsoft.com/security/scann ... fault.aspx There are several sites online that will scan for viruses without installing on her machine.

3) Is her hard drive almost full? Most people will keep downloading stuff (pictures, music, trash) and never realize they are taking up room. When the room gets too full, nobody can move around. Have her go into Accessories-->System Tools and run Disk Cleanup, then Disk Defragmenter (or install Smart Defrag 3 [http://www.iobit.com/iobitsmartdefrag.html]). Also, I would recommend installing Revo Uninstaller (http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uni ... nload.html) to get rid of Toolbars in her browser and other programs she doesn't use.

4) Only after the hard drive has been cleaned and cleared up, then I would worry about backing it up on an external hard drive. Since the external hard drive will be used for Windows (ugh!), I would reformat it in NTFS so windows is happy. I use Todo Backup {http://www.todo-backup.com/products/hom ... ftware.htm} because it is simple and works.

Well, I've said my 2 cents worth here.

As Larry said, as long as it's just data, the ext3 drive is fine.

Depending on the reason it "barely runs", yes, it would be prudent to back up all the data before trying to do any cleanup or repairs. My SOP is to just back up the whole Users\username directory.

Once you get that accomplished, and if you are going to attempt any cleanup/repair, feel free to let me know what you're faced with. I might be able to give you some pointers.
