Re the discussion in the RC2 feedback topic, I haven't managed to try RC2 yet (day at the dentist instead of Hip Op tomorrow!).

The version of Virtual Box that Synaptic will install is 4.2.16. Sorry, I've forgotten what problem you were having, but I've just installed VB, together with the recommends, and the guest additions (10 files in all), and have successfully created a virtual XP machine.

I installed VBox in RC1 via synaptic yesterday - a choice of 4.1.30, 4.2.22 or 4.3.8. I chose 4.3.8 and the install went fine. I had to install the extpack separately (I had that downloaded from a previous installation) and I had to add my user to the vboxusers group. Other than that, VBox works fine using my long-running XP VM.

Result confirmed on RC2 - VBox 4.3.8 via synaptic, install extpack, add user to vboxusers group, logout and back in. Set up XP VM using existing .vdi file, add usb filter for printer, test print. All OK.

The total time for all the above, including downloading the RC2 delta, writing usb stick, booting live & installing MX-14 was 28 minutes. But then, I don't have read the installation prompts now - my fingers know what to select!

I had a quicker and easier time of it by downloading the 4.3.8 deb from the Oracle download site:

https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads

It installed, including creating the group vboxusers and putting my username in it. Rebooted and there it was--total 5 mins on my relatively weak AAO 722.

Haven't tried to use it yet.

When you install VB this way, will it do automatic updates when the notice appears about a new version?

I get the notice, but I frankly don't remember if it automatically downloads or I need to click a web link to the page. Either way it's easy.

You DO have to enable the virtualbox repo first, just a note for those.. I tried it the b2 way (not enabling that separate repo, no dice with the kernel modules and such).

Right now installed using the repos, 4.3 installed. Just have to copy a few files over before I can test proper, but it is looking ok so far.

The oracle hosted VB repos are predefined in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/various.list. all you have to do is uncomment it and refresh your sources.

Was your user added to the vboxusers group? Or di dyou have to do what GaerBoy did?
