problems with synaptic repositories

#1 Post by whbr »

I wanted to look at my repository list in synaptic today and when I select repositories under the settings tab the item highlights and then everything pretty much locks up. Other aspects of synaptic, search, preferences etc all seem fine (as long as I haven't tried to select repositories first). This problem doesn't absolutely block use of other programs but it makes cursor movement and keyboard input so painfully slow that the only effective remedy I've found is to manually turn the computer off and restart. I tried killing the process but can't really get to that option due to the aforementioned keyboard and mouse problems. The problem is reproducible on reboot. I recall in the last few days upgrading some apt related package but don't remember which. I'm guessing I should uninstall and try reinstalling something but before I go down that path was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what might be up and what package(s) I should try to remove and replace? Thanks. Mark

ps, this is an up to date M-12 running kde. More info on request.

I think this thread might shed some light. apparently the sources.list file in mepis can grow to prodigious size, causing some weird synaptic behavior.

and this one.

Odds are extremely high that your

Code: Select all

sources.list
file is huge. Open up a su version of dolphin and browse to /etc/apt and see how big that file is. Just happened to me. Mine was 420MB! thought I had a bug or something. If you haven't added any sources to it manually, You can just empty and save it and all will be well. Mine was so big it choked kwrite. I had to rename it and create a new one from a blank file. here's my thread - kmathern includes some feedback in there as well. - mike

There's another topic here: http://forum.mepiscommunity.org/viewtop ... 73#p319373 where I have a command that will grep out the good repo entries from all the bogus/corrupt entries.

220MB, 6.5x10^6 lines of #. That did it. Thanks. I missed the older threads on a search because I thought I was dealing with a 'new' problem related to a recent upgrade. This forum is the best.
