MX 14 CR: The Whisker Menu Thread

#1 Postby Stevo » Fri Jul 04, 2014 9:56 am

We have a new version of the Whisker Menu used in MX 14 available in the MX testing repository. This is not enabled by default, but the URL is

Code: Select all

deb http://main.mepis-deb.org/mepiscr/mx-test/ mx-14 test

I'm not sure if the URL is in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mepis.list by default, just commented out, but check to see first.

Anyway, the package is called xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin. Probably the biggest new feature is the option to switch the position of categories and launchers, but there are many other bugfixes and updates, including

Add waiting for grabs
allows modifier as shortcut
Add padding to username
Add single panel row option
Add about entry to context menu
Load applications immediately
Recognize keypad enter as return for searching
Set menu window type hint to DIALOG
Translation updates: Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese (Taiwan), Czech, Dutch, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Malay, Norwegian Bokmål, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish

This has already been tested by several members of the development team, but we need some more people to put it though testing before we move it to the main MX repo.

You will need to exit and restart the plugin after installation to see the new version, or log out and back in.

Thanks!

So far, seems fine.

I actually like the categories [as they are]
away from the menu button,
seems like fewer moves required
[to start an app].

What would be nice would be to show
the entire program name and description as a popup (hint).
Then I could make the menu narrower.

Seems quicker, but that's subjective.

That would make Graeme Gott happy b/c that was his intent in the first place, he answered a query from me on this.

I've been meaning to ask somebody,
what does "Show menu hierarchy" mean.
For me, it doesn't seem to do anything?
Maybe because we have no hierarchy in the menu?

I noticed that too, tried it, and reached the same conclusion you did. Got me wondering how I would set up a menu heirarchy in the first place...

Testing it...NOW! So far, so good. Reconfiggered the columns easily and successfully. Thank you, Jerry, for interceding with Mr. Gott on my behalf for this feature (done through XFCE Forum). Me like.

I think that a Menu Heirarchy would look similar to the File System Tree in the Side Pane of a File Manager, enabling one to see all the categories, subcategories, and entries at the same time. My best guess.

Thanks, but that is not actually the way it went. I asked him about this way back in January, I think, and he said he was probably going to add the feature since it had been requested many times.

Looks like it's unanimous that it's an improvement. Just moved it to main.
